Technology takes a step in the blind direction with the ‘Touch and Go’ GPS system for the blind

There are plenty of times when technology goes beyond simple games and gadgets and takes on a role of a serious enhancement for the handicapped or in this case, a seeing-eye dog, of sorts. These are the best times. Recently a designer, Natalia Ponomareva came up with a brilliant concept for enhancing the world around us for the blind. Her system, called the Touch & Go is, simply put, GPS for the blind. It’s a neat looking wearable system that consists of a earpiece for receiving directions and a navigation system to be worn on the hand. The navigator set up is designed to feel like map (1:1000 scale) so users can feel their way around on to get a better idea of the surrounding. It’s tactile ‘display’ together with the audio piece conveying directions should make the real world a whole lot easier to navigate for those without sight. The concept is absolutely brilliant.
