Gadget Lab Notes: A Wireless Router That Looks Like a Wind Turbine

The Logitech LAN-WH450N/GR wireless router is designed for 450 Mbps speeds

Gadget Lab Notes is an eclectic roundup of gadget news briefs and intriguing products that catch our eye.

Is That a Mini Wind Turbine? Nope, It’s a Logitech Wireless Router
Logitech’s LAN-WH450N/GR wireless router definitely wins the title of “most uniquely designed router” in my book (at least for the moment). The turbine or fan looking contraption at the top does not in fact have anything to do with wind; it’s a tri-tenna that is supposed to help the router access speeds up to 450 Mbps, with compatible devices. Other than that, it’s basically your average wireless router. It’ll be available in Japan in mid-April.

That directory is the same one that Starlogger actually uses.

Gadget Lab Podcast: Amazon Wants to Sell You Android Apps

Michael Calore and Dylan Tweney bring you the gadget news of the week in episode #109 of our surprisingly popular podcast.

Top of this week’s gadget news is the fact that Amazon has finally launched its own app store for Android, cleverly called the Amazon Appstore for Android. It’s a more curated, easier-to-browse app store than the default Google Market. Of course, they’re being sued by Apple.

We also talk about a new app called Color, which is available for the iPhone and (if you can find it) for Android. It lets you take pictures and share them with random strangers in your vicinity.

We show off a web app that creates a Kindle-friendly interface for Google Translate, making your Kindle into a kind of universal translator.

Finally we take a look at Skullcandy’s Roc Nation Aviator headphones. These are stylish, comfortable, portable and have pretty good quality sound, though not quite worth the $ 150 pricetag.

At $ 0, they’re an outstanding deal, however. And you can get them for free, if you’re lucky: Thanks to the nice folks at Skullcandy, we have a pair of these headphones to give away. To enter our mini contest, just add a headphone-related photo to the Gadget Lab Flickr pool. (You’ll need to upload your picture to Flickr, then add it to the pool.) It could be a photo of you wearing your favorite headphones, a headphone mod, or maybe just an artsy photo of your best headphones. Be creative!

According to an analyst, Apple could be working on a connected HDTV

Gadget Lab Notes is an eclectic roundup of gadget news briefs and intriguing products that catch our eye.

Does Apple Have a Smart TV in the Works?
According to Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty they do. She expects Apple to out a “Smart TV” with DVR, gaming, and FaceTime capabilities sometime in 2012 or 2013. Asian component suppliers suggest that they’re in the process of building a prototype. An Apple HDTV set could be capable of snagging a big portion of the connected television market; even if Apple only captured 1% of the TV market by 2013, they’d make about $ 4 billion in profits.

Anonymous FCC Agent About T-Mo/AT&T Merger: No Way
An unnamed FCC official said there’s “no way” the FCC would approve AT&T’s proposed buyout of T-Mobile. Gadget Lab Notes is an eclectic roundup of gadget news briefs and intriguing products that catch our eye.

NeuroFocus Mynd Is a Wireless EEG Headset
Have you ever wanted to record exactly what you’re thinking? NeuroFocus’ Mynd is a sensor covered EEG headset that records your thoughts—it captures mental activity 2,000 times per second—and relays that information over Bluetooth. The Mynd’s mind-reading capabilities have applications in the medical field, as a product for people with neurological disabilities, as well as with tracking Internet surfing habits for advertisers and marketers. Compared to other brain-wave monitoring headsets, it doesn’t look too terrible… kind of like you’re wearing a spidery plastic and metal clamshell on your head.

FREEWAY Speakerphone Uses HD Voice Ready Technology and 3 Speakers
The Jabra FREEWAY claims to be the first Bluetooth speakerphone to be HD Voice compliant and use three speakers. It can be controlled using voice recognition for tasks like answering, dialing, ending, or rejecting phone calls, and an automatic power feature keeps it in standby mode when you’re in the car, and powered off once you get out. HD Voice should provide better quality audio during calls, as long as your phone is compatible. It’ll be available in the US in May for $ 129.

Your iPad 2 Can Stick to Your Fridge
Be careful trying this one at home in case your fridge isn’t quite as magnetic, but several people have found that the new iPad’s Smart Cover will stick to metallic, magnetic surfaces like a fridge. This could make it very convenient to look at recipes online or watch videos in the kitchen as you cook. This is a much more reasonable application for the iPad’s magnetic capabilities than as an oversized clock dangling from your neck.
