RIM Preparing to Enter the Tablet Market?
Apple’s successful launch of the iPad has other companies scrambling to get their tablet plans in order. Smartphone maker RIM has been rumored to be working on a tablet device to compete with the “magical” gadget from Cupertino. The name for RIM’s latest device? BlackPad.
According to MobileCrunch, Waterloo based RIM recently purchased the BlackPad.com domain name to presumably use as a landing spot for their upcoming Android based tablet device. The domain was previously registered by another owner and there is no word on the amount RIM had to pay to get their hands on the domain.
Of course, just because RIM purchased BlackPad.com does not mean they have plans to use it or that any of their future products will carry the BlackPad name. It’s not unusual for large companies to register or purchase several domains that end up never being used. Often times, companies purchase domains to protect their brands or to throw off the competition and the press on future product plans.
Early reaction to the new name has been mixed with many people saying they hoped RIM would come up with something more original. There’s no official word from RIM on the domain purchase so we’ll have to wait it out and see how our friends North of the border decide to use their new BlackPad domain.
