One day, Apple is purportedly sourcing parts suppliers for it rumored HDTV project. The next day, actual HDTV prototypes are in the hands of investigation labs in Canada. Such is the hurried improvement cycle of a item that presently lives only in rumorspace.

Indeed, no manufacturing challenge is too tough for Apple when it is operating on a project that does not officially exist.

According to the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail, telecom firms Rogers and Bell Canada have in their labs an early prototype of Apple’s rumored tv set. Despite the fact that the possibility of an sincere-to-goodness prototype being tested is exciting, the concept that it is being scrutinized by telco operators is really the more interesting component of the report.

“Rumors that Apple’s tv is in the hands of telcos recommend that they’ve decided to stick to the Microsoft model, rather than creating the ‘Apple subscription knowledge,’” Forrester analyst James McQuivey mentioned. With the Xbox, Microsoft teamed up with Comcast and other providers to push Tv and cable services onto its gaming console. If The Globe and Mail’s report is to be believed, Apple would be taking a similar approach with its Tv, rather than providing an a la carte-style subscription service, a tack some have recommended Apple may well adhere to.

“They’re looking for a partner. They’re seeking for someone with wireless and broadband capabilities,” The Globe and Mail supply said of Apple. Jefferies analyst Peter Misek suggested that in the U.S., the Television would most likely arrive on AT&ampT and Verizon.

“This enterprise model tends to make the most sense for Apple,” IHS analyst Jordan Selburn told Wired, saying the approach would let Apple fully integrate content from the operator, as well as iTunes. This method would also give operators the possibility to dip their toes into the set-top rated box game, Selburn stated, giving them “some way to jump on and monetize the video content train” popularized by devices like Roku, Apple Television and Boxee.

Yesterday, a leaked Best Acquire survey queried prospective buyers about their interests in an Apple-branded Television, fueling additional speculation. Final week, a report had Apple reaching out to component suppliers to supply the display and other parts for its tv set. And these two most recent rumor tidbits follow even deeper speculation relating to the TV’s user encounter, size and component suppliers.

As for the prototypes being tested in Canada, Selburn was a bit shocked. “You’d want to go with businesses that have the most subscribers,” he stated, calling out Comcast as an apparent partner. “Not AT&ampT and Verizon, or BC and Rogers. Apple does not have a background of carrying out issues in a small fashion.”

Whenever — if ever — Apple’s iTV does come out, it appears poised for accomplishment: Wall Street analysts assume Apple could snatch up five percent of the complete HDTV industry.

“The sheer mass of rumors more than the past six months seems to indicate this is real,” Selburn said.

Function in the server room is stressful enough for today’s IT guy without having some vendor warning you that there’s a opportunity that some of your gear might burst into flames and kill you. Sadly, that is sort of what Cisco has published in a current field discover.

In July of 2011, the enterprise giant discovered a flaw that could potentially lead to a MOSFET transistor on some of its UCS B440 blade servers to overheat and brief out in spectacular fashion — destroying the complete board. Cisco went on record as saying that the failures appeared to be random, and that there wasn’t a widespread, systemic concern affecting the components. In the weeks that followed, a firmware update was tested and delivered, and Cisco appeared to have the difficulty beneath control.

As time passed, although, they learned that wasn’t the case. In January another B440 meltdown was reported, and Cisco headed back to the drawing board to re-engineer the B440 mainboard. Now, as many Pc producers did in the heyday of faulty capacitors, Cisco has begun replacing the faulty boards in all affected B440 server blades.

Realistically, you are not in any danger of getting burned to a crisp. In terms of private threat, the only real danger you are in is getting to devote all night at corporate operating feverishly to maintain issues running smoothly despite a failed blade (or handful of blades). Cisco is also now advising that you set up the most recent version of their blade management software program, which includes an update that particularly monitors the B440 for MOSFET-related difficulty.

El Reg figures only about 5-ten% of Cisco’s B440s are affected by the faulty parts, so there’s possibly no require to press the panic button. Just make contact with Cisco as soon as you can and order a replacement board — and then swap it in as soon as feasible.

News and rumors recommend an Apple-branded HDTV is somewhere on the horizon, but it is tough to differentiate hard evidence from hype.

A digital survey put out by Best Get and leaked to The Verge this weekend asked consumers to rate their interest in a $ 1,499, 42-inch, iOS-laden Apple HDTV. The survey listed a series of intriguing attributes: a 1080p LED display, iPad/iPhone remote control, and access to the App Store and the cloud, amongst other alluring specs.

OK, Apple rumors are 1 factor. In fact, they’re Digitimes‘ stock and trade. But considering that when has Very best Acquire, the nation’s most well-recognized electronics retailer, become a player in the Apple rumors game?

We asked, and Greatest Get answered: “The consumer survey was a routine offer effectiveness survey conducted by one of Greatest Buy’s analysis partners. Any brand reference was hypothetical. The survey is no longer obtainable,” Very best Buy told us in a statement.

Leaks are typical. Some are planned, most are accidental. But the Greatest Acquire survey could be just an additional example of a company that didn’t forsee how its actions might be perceived.

“I doubt that this is one thing that is an intentional hype,” mentioned Sarah Rotman-Epps, a senior analyst with Forrester Research. More most likely, Rotman-Epps said, Very best Acquire is trying to gauge consumer interest so that it can have a far better thought how many units to order — if and when an iTV comes along.

Although speculation fueled by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster recently had Apple contacting Tv component makers in anticipation of an iTV launch, opinions vary significantly as to regardless of whether an Apple Television would in fact hit the industry this year. Greatest Buy’s comments indicate it is just thinking ahead to a hypothetical release.

“Apple is notoriously private about its product releases, and cautious about its interaction with partners, like Finest Purchase,” mentioned Rotman-Epps.

A few weeks ago we were introduced to Nikon’s extraordinary new flagship, the D4. The $ 6000 DSLR has a huge ISO range, a 16.2MP sensor, a new processing engine, loads of pro-level capabilities, and then some cool perks, like a silent mode. If you are a Nikon-using pro that demands one camera that can do it all the D4 is the one particular, but there is no finding around that fact that it is large, expensive, and has features you just may not want, like built in ethernet. Enthusiasts, meet the D800.

Possibly Nikon’s worst kept secret of the past year, the D800 is the company’s $ 3000 D700 replacement. It turns out that the camera is like the D4, with a smaller set of capabilities and some notable modifications, but not as considerably as the D700 was like the D3. The D800 is really a lot its personal camera and will stand apart from the D4 in some key regions.

The first thing to note is that the full-frame (FX) sensor shoots at a 36.three megapixels (7360 x 4912). That is a enormous quantity of information to take in, adequate to overwhelm the camera’s SD and CF slots (sorry no XQD this time) and virtually any user’s off-camera storage. There is a 15.4MP DX crop mode though, so you can take high quality shots with a bit much more range. ISO runs from 100 to 6400 in regular mode and up to 25,600 in the extended mode, placing it properly behind the D4′s night vision-like ISO 204,800. The D800 is not as quick as the D4 either — it shoots at 4 fps in FX mode and 5 fps in DX.

Other back-of-the-box attributes include a three.2-inch LCD, in-camera two-shot HDR, a ten-pin accessory port for video pros, uncompressed HDMI output, a headphone jack, and stereo mic input. Sadly, It does not have the D4′s super cool silent mode.

Sensing a trend? Probably the image above will aid. Just like the D4, the D800 is very massive on video. Combine this with the very same focus method as the D4, and some sensible attributes, like that face priority works in film mode, and this HDSLR will be pumping out great 1080p30 video when it hits.

Whilst the D800 has a lot of the D4′s video functions, serious videographers really should note that whilst it can shoot in FX and DX modes, it does not have the D4′s 1080p crop mode. This will mean much less versatility while shooting, but it shouldn’t be a significant strike against it.

The D800 doesn’t beat D4 in a lot of places, aside from size, but there is at least 1: the D800 has built in USB 3.. Wondering why the D4 is missing this seemingly fundamental perk? The camera merely didn’t have area for it.

What is really exciting about this announcement, aside from the apparent, is that Nikon has yet another trick up its sleeve: the D800e. This alternate model removes the low-pass filter from the camera’s sensor which can mean elevated sharpness, but the likelihood of acquiring some nasty Moire is significantly higher. Issues get rather technical at this point, but what you want to know is the D800e will appeal to men and women shooting beneath really certain scenarios, like landscape, product shots, and studio, where they want maximum resolution and sharpness, and are willing to take some tradeoffs for it. Most of these folks have customized the sensors on their cameras and they have a workflow established to deal with the side effects.

Nikon wouldn’t comment officially on it, but it seems to me that the D800e could be a replacement — at least for now — for the D3X, which was not updated when Nikon announced the D4 (which is generally the replacement for the D3S). The D800e will sell for $ 3300 and ought to be readily available in April.

While the D700 was essentially the D3 sensor in a smaller physique, that’s not the case with the D800/D4. The D800 drops a lot of the D4′s more niche functions but manages to choose up USB three. and retain nearly all the significant video perks. The huge question with the D800, which I tested but was not allowed to keep pictures I took with it, will be if Nikon created the proper move by going with 36MP. Some men and women are going to say this is just too significantly details — we are obtaining into medium format territory here — but Nikon insists that image good quality was not lost by going with the higher pixel count. They also note that if 36MP is too much for you, then it only takes a second to move to FX mode and halve that amount. Meanwhile you get some cool benefits with 36MP, like remarkable cropped panning if you like to time-lapse (did I mention the D800 has a built in intervalometer and time-lapse mode?).

The D800 will sell for $ 3000 and be readily available in March. The D700 will remain on sale, presumable until Nikon runs out of stock, but they didn’t officially when sales would cease.

The Nest thermostat — a more attractive method of dealing with your home’s temperature. Photo: Ariel Zambelich/Wired.com

Honeywell, a company long known for its commercial and residential thermostats, filed a patent infringement lawsuit on Monday against Nest Labs, the outfit that launched the highly publicized Nest thermostat last October.

The suit claims the Nest Learning Thermostat infringes on seven of Honeywell’s patents, spanning categories as generic as a “natural language installer” (a set-up menu, by any other name) to an “HVAC controller,” a standard component of any temperature control system.

“Competition is good and we welcome it, but we will not stand by while competitors, large or small, offer products that infringe on our intellectual property,” Honeywell environmental and combustion controls president Beth Wozniak said in a statement issued Monday.

As for Nest, the company is keeping mum on specifics: “We have not yet reviewed the actual filing, which we learned about this morning through Honeywell’s press release,” said Nest Labs spokeswoman Kate Brinks in an e-mail to Wired. “We will provide comment once we’ve had the opportunity to review it.”

The Nest thermostat made waves within the consumer tech community when it was unveiled last year, thanks in part to its creator Tony Fadell’s pedigree: Fadell led Apple’s iPod and iPhone division as a vice president before leaving the company in early 2010. To follow up two of the most successful consumer tech products of all time with a thermostat, of all things, was a peculiar move.

Fadell’s thermostat, however, aims to revamp how consumers use their heating and air conditioning systems. Like the iPod, the Nest is a sleek piece of industrial design, deviating from the bland boxes we’re so accustomed to seeing on our walls. Artificial intelligence programming within the Nest turns your heat and A/C on or off, depending on who’s home, who’s awake and who’s just wasting energy.

Honeywell’s infringement claims seem broad at first glance, akin to many suits being thrown around in the smartphone industry as of late. Best Buy, the retailer that offers the Nest thermostat, is also named in the suit.

In its press release filed on Monday morning, Honeywell claims its suit against Nest and Best Buy is in line with other suits it has filed recently against Venstar Inc. and ICM Controls, again for infringing on “thermostat and combustion controls patents.”

After Apple announced the iPhone 4S last October, it steadily sunk in to iPhone four owners that the voice assistant Siri wasn’t coming to older devices. Then when complex jailbreak tweaks brought Siri to the iPhone 4, we saw that the older iPhone was perfectly capable of employing Siri. Heck, even the iPhone 3GS can run Siri with out a hitch. The only logical conclusion was that Siri’s iPhone 4S exclusivity was about advertising and marketing, advertising and marketing, and advertising.

Today, nevertheless, a chip analyst is piping up to disagree. As reported by CNET, there’s a technology referred to as Audience, which specializes in isolating voices from background noise. As it turns out, Audience is integrated into Apple’s A5 chip. Analyst Linley Gwennap believes that this solves the mystery of why Apple kept Siri away from older devices.

Though the iPhone 4 also contains Audience tech integrated into the A4 chip, it is not as advanced. Audience mentioned that its iPhone 4 era technology was only effective when your telephone was held close to your mouth when speaking. The iPhone 4S noise cancellation, nevertheless, can distinguish a voice from background noise even when held farther away (as Siri is frequently employed).

This sounds like a plausible explanation, and such perfectionism on Apple’s component would fit with the company’s tendencies. But there’s a single glaring hole in this explanation: why doesn’t the iPad 2 have Siri? It homes the identical A5 chip as the iPhone 4S, which signifies that it too ought to use the exact same Audience isolation technologies.

There doesn’t often have to be 1 explanation for a mystery. Audience tech could have played a large component in Apple’s choice to leave the iPhone four in the dark, but advertising and marketing most likely played a part as properly. If you take away Siri, then a faster processor and a much better camera are the only selling features of the iPhone 4S. Those are great features, but they lack excitement. Siri provides that, and Apple knew it.
