OpenFeint PlayTime – Multiplayer Gaming for iOS and Android
Yesterday’s announcement by Apple about their new Game Center app brought a lot of excitement to the gaming community. Of course, Game Center brings social networking capabilities to your gaming experience. It allows easier access to online multiplayer games and will give you the ability to see what games your friends are playing and their results.
Today, it looks like iOS gamers have more to celebrate. Aurora Feint, a mobile gaming company, announced that it plans to release a development kit called PlayTime that will allow its OpenFeint social network to enable inter-connectivity between iOS and Android devices. In other words, game developers will be able to create games that can be played in real-time across iOS and Android devices. Aurora Feint mentioned it will launch PlayTime later this year.
According to Aurora Feint, their Open Feint PlayTime service will allow gamers to enter into a multi-player gaming experience, do matchmaking, and do real-time voice chat during gameplay. PlayTime will be fully compatible with Apple’s Game Center. In addition, the service will include a feature that allows multiplayer games to stay in play even if one player drops out due to a bad connection. The service provides the ability to substitute a computer opponent for a dropped player.
It’s no mystery that over the last couple of years, smartphones have quickly become powerful game consoles. This was proven yesterday when gaming company Epic showcased their Epic Citadel game demo at the Apple event.
Mobile devices have quickly become widely accepted gaming platforms because they are displaying amazing graphics across many games. But, one big issue thus far has been the amount of effort required to develop cross-compatibility between various mobile devices. It seems that companies like Aurora Feint are quickly addressing that issue.

Samsung Gem Jumps Out Into The Open
Best Buy has a guide that is showing the Samsung Gem, to be coming soon to Verizon. It does appear that this will be a lower end Android handset when you put it up next to the Fascinate and all the other heavy hitting Droid phones. What we do know about the Gem is, it will be running Android 2.1 and have TouchWiz 3.0 layered on top. Swype will be added as it is for most Samsung Android devices, and it will have a 3.2 megapixel camera, 16GB SD card slot (not sure if card is included) Wi-Fi, and GPS. There is not any pricing or release date information, but we would imagine that it would be on the cheaper, and sooner than later side. If your interested, we will keep you posted. Beats by Eames
This right here is a wireless speaker system inspired by the works of Charles and Ray Eames. Specifically, it uses the “Eames Quadraflex Speakers” system as a drawing board to create this DIY project. Designer Joel Pirela built a wooden box with an access door in the back, jammed (with care) a bunch of amazing speaker components in there, and created an opening for sound at the front, covered with a black aluminum grill. Painted all in an off-white shade for that “vintage look” and set it right up in Pirela’s house.
You may ask, “hey, what’s the deal? why would you make something bigger than it needs to be?” Well I’ll tell you. The cords go in the extra space when the speaker is not in use AND because it totally sounds amazing in there. That on top of, of course, the fact that those little speakers, while neat looking, have a totally different aesthetic than the Eames box. Both hot, now you’ve got it all, baby. Now I’ve got to make one too.
