HTC EVO 4G’s Update to Android 2.2 Beginning July 30th?

That came out of nowhere. But, thanks to a new leak from an internal Sprint screen, it looks like the HTC EVO 4G is getting ready to get updated to Android 2.2 — starting tomorrow. That’s right, July 30th. But, in classic Sprint fashion, the update isn’t going to just bring the EVO 4G to the most current software version, but it’s also going to include a plethora of new updates to the device itself, courtesy of Sprint.

For example, you’ll be getting a host of new widgets (admittedly, that’s more from HTC than Sprint), and you’ll also be able to use a flashlight application to make use of that LED flash on the back of the device. You will also be able to use “light-assisted” features to help you take 720p HD video. There’s also improvements to the overall video capture as well. But, a bit of bad news, too. That mobile hot spot hack that made the rounds on some EVOs after its launch? Yeah, Sprint’s probably going to patch that up with this update, so if you’re partial to it, you may want to evaluate your situation.

The OTA update is supposed to start tomorrow, but obviously it won’t get pushed to all the handsets out there at once. You should expect it to be rolled out in waves, and it will probably take until the end of the first week of August before it finishes up. That’s if the update actually starts rolling out tomorrow. We’ll be looking forward to some images from you EVO owners out there, if you get the update.

Are smartphones like the Dell Streak too big?

Smartphones getting too big thumb 550x389 44013 Are smartphones like the Dell Streak too big?

We’ve come a long way from the bulky satellite phones of the ’80s that used to come with a lunchbox-sized attachment. Still, with whoppers like the Dell Streak on the horizon, and with the HTC Evo having its own kickstand and all, it feels like we’re regressing.

Brenthaven Bill-Fold iPad Sleeve – Accessory Review

brentahven bill fold 1 Brenthaven Bill Fold iPad Sleeve – Accessory ReviewAs a long-time user of Brenthaven bags for my Mac laptops, I was glad to hear they were releasing a series of products for the Apple iPad.  One of Brenthaven’s first new iPad products is the Bill-Fold iPad sleeve which we have been testing the past few weeks.

The Bill-Fold is not your typical iPad sleeve.  Each Bill-Fold iPad sleeve takes a Green approach to protecting your iPad by using recycled material.  The recycled material comes straight from old billboard signs, so you’re guaranteed no two sleeves will look the same.  This inventive approach leads to some distinctly unique looking sleeves sure to get people wondering what you’re carrying around.

Another unique thing about the sleeve is that you can access your iPad from either end.  Both ends of the Bill-Fold feature velcro closures.  When both ends are sealed, the Bill-Fold “puffs” up to give your iPad some extra protection on the corners. For those times when you don’t need to store your iPad, you can undo both ends and fold the Bill-Fold flat for easier storage inside another bag or purse.

One thing about sleeves is that you always have to worry about your iPad potentially sliding out of the open end to meet its untimely demise.  The Bill-Fold, with its two end velcro design, doubles my worries. Although I never had an issue with the velcro enclosures, I tended to keep the Bill-Fold securely stowed inside my laptop bag while transporting my iPad.  The combo worked great and provided my iPad the extra bit of protection I was looking for.

The insides of the Bill-Fold sleeves are lined with a soft faux-suede material to keep your iPad scratch free.  An added benefit of the faux-suede material is the constant inserting and removing of your iPad from the sleeve actually helps to remove some of the grime that builds up on the glass screen during daily use.

How do you increase the testosterone in a classic 1982 Porsche 928? Well, you could just shove a Hoeing turbine engine that shoots flames out of the hood in there. That’d be a start. View full post on DVICE

The Tenerife bioclimatic holiday village

tenerife 300x167 The Tenerife bioclimatic holiday villageThe first time I saw this picture, I thought I was looking at the entrance to the Vivos underground shelter. These are actually dwellings for the “first bioclimatic holiday village in the world”.

I have to admit that I never heard that this term until I read my source, but here is what it means. These are self-sufficient houses that are “built in individual designs utilizing different technologies, where it will function as a living experiment in sustainability”.

There are about 25 of these off-the-grid houses in all, and it will serve as a temporary shelter for tourists as well as science laboratories for this experiment. Apparently, sensors “constantly feed back information on their temperature, humidity and air movement in order to determine which techniques are the most efficient”.

This village is located on Tenerife, which is in the Canary Islands, about 800 miles from Spain and 185 miles from the coast of Africa. I wouldn’t mind living in one of these things myself, just so I would know what it is like to not be dependent on the electric company. Personally, I believe that this is where we are going.

By the way, it took 15 years in development to make these houses, and cost about 13 million. I wonder how much it costs to stay a single night.

ChouChou Electric Butterfly

electric butterfly 07 27 2010 300x192 ChouChou Electric ButterflyI saw this the other day, and I’m not certain why I didn’t report on it then. Normally, I’m all over the cool robot gadgets.

I then watched the video that you can view after the jump. Not to be a spoiler, but it features a butterfly in a jar. If you’ve ever put a butterfly in a jar, then you know how it moves when you strike the top. That is what you will see in this video, except the butterfly is not real.

This is the ChouChou Electric Butterfly, and it apparently has some AA batteries in the jar lid that give it the power to “flap” from place to place. I’m guessing that if you let it out of the jar, it would not fly away.

Still, I’m darned impressed with this technology. We’ve discussed how technology often imitates nature with projects like the RoboSwift artificial bird technology. It looks like we are one step in perfecting the robot butterfly.

This ChouChou was on display at the Tokyo Toy Show, and it will actually be sold to people like you and me in September. It will probably only have a Japanese release, which means those of us outside the Land of the Rising Sun will probably need to check the Japan Trend Shop.
