Eric Schmidt: Android Could Bring in $10b with News Subscription Service
When you’re selling somewhere in the ballpark of 160,000 smartphones a day, then a subscription service for just about anything starts looking like a good idea. And apparently Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO, is beginning to think the same way (not that he hasn’t been, mind you). Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, Schmidt outlined very briefly what a news subscription service for Android might look like.

His focus was the money part. When asked if Android would actually be a good money maker in this regard, he suggested that Android could potentially see $10 billion a year generated from an idea like this. All he would need to do is allow for paid access to newspapers and other periodicals. And it wouldn’t even take a large subscription payment, as there are plenty of Android-based devices out there that could take advantage of something like this.
And, let’s face it: with Apple offering up their own reader-based competition, the fact that it’s missing its own news subscription service at the moment would be a great momentum-builder for Google. Unfortunately, not many figureheads in the print publishing industry really like Google. For example, Rupert Murdoch? Not a fan of Google, or the fact that the search engine allows for folks to read parts of stories that would normally be hidden behind a paywall. So, for Schmidt and company to get something like this off the ground, there would have to be a pretty big piece of fruit hanging off the end of that line.
PadPressed Converts Your Blog Into an iPad Application
Are you a blogger? If you’re a blogger, chances are you’re doing it on WordPress. WordPress is a very popular blog software and powers some of the most popular sites on the web today, including PadGadget.
If you’re not a blogger, but have been thinking about blogging, you may want to check out PadPressed. PadPressed is a WordPress plug-in built to deliver a browsing experience for your readers on an iPad.
For example, when a reader visits your blog from their iPad it’s automatically formatted to be iPad compatible with swipe-to-advance gestures, accelerometer aware column formatting, touch navigation, and more. PadPressed makes your blog function like a native iPad app.
PadPressed works with your existing theme and it’s only activated when a reader navigates to your blog from their iPad. In addition, it comes with a theme options panel that allows you to set the logo used for your homescreen icon, icons for touch navigation, featured slider settings, and your unique skin.
The plug-in will also notice the orientation of a reader’s iPad. If a reader is holding the iPad in Portrait mode it displays an article as a single column. If a user rotates PadPressed into Landscape mode, the article automatically turns into three separate columns.

FedEX CEO envisions a future of robot planes
I’m sure that most of you have seen all the Fed Ex airplanes at the “Hub” in the film Cast Away. Yes, they really do need all those planes to get all of our stuff to the proper place, and FedEX CEO Fred Smith sees a better way.
His vision is simple: robot planes. Yes, I know, there are many safety concerns with these. What Fred Smith envisions are not these autonomous planes that fly on their own to select locations, but rather an idea where one plane with a real human pilot leads a fleet of robotic planes around the world and makes certain they land properly at their proper destination. In other words, robot planes that fly in V formation like geese, with a human plane in the lead.
Yes, this sounds like something like science fiction, but you know that there are several UAV robot drones that work for the military. However, you should also know that UAVs are not supposed to fly over residential areas. Therefore, FedEx is going to have to get a lot of clearance to pull off something like this.
In a related story, some researchers at Ohio’s Wright-Patterson Air Force Base want to build some robots that can load and unload planes. I suppose that we’re on our way to completely removing the human from the shipping equation. This might not be a good thing in the longrun.

Perfect Portions Digital Scale

By Andrew Liszewski
A big part of a healthy diet is eating sensible portions, but if you’re completely clueless when it comes to how much sugar, carbs, cholesterol or sodium is in a handful of your favorite snack, the Perfect Portions scale is like Nutrition 101. It’s a combination food scale & nutritional calculator that has a built-in database of 1,999 different foods, plus the ability to store an additional 99 custom entries. You just zero the scale, plunk down your food and then punch in the corresponding food code so the scale knows what it’s measuring. The nutritional stats, as well as the total weight, are then displayed on an LCD designed to look like the Nutrition Facts labels found on food packaging these days. As kitchen scales go the Perfect Portions goes above and beyond the call of duty, so the $59.99 price tag doesn’t seem that unreasonable.

Samsung HMX-E10 is a full HD camcorder for beginners
Love capturing most of your precious moments in a digital format? While pictures are great at conveying a visual story at that moment in time, videos also have their place in the entire hierarchy. The Samsung HMX-E10 plays its role well, being a full HD camcorder that is small and portable enough to be slipped into your pocket without much problem at all. This is a point-and-shoot device, boasting a versatile, 270-degree swiveling lens which will enhance your creativity while allowing you to record your very own unique views in each video through various angles. With its swiveling lens, you can also have a new sense of fun when recording video, as it allows you to be part of the video itself without straining your arm too much (or making a guesswork at where the lens is pointed at).
All recorded video can be transferred over to a computer using the innovative built-in USB port function, which is a similar to what Cisco’s line of Flip camcorders have. It also frees up your luggage space, since there is no USB cable to bring around. When plugged in via USB, you can also charge the battery, killing two birds with one stone. Not only that, the HMX-E10 will come loaded with Samsung’s play-edit-sharing program known as intelli-studio, where this intuitive program will offer you the ability to edit and play your video from any computer without having to install supporting software. Perfect when you’re traveling and do not have a personal computer or notebook to fiddle with.
With an interactive and onscreen “upload” button, the HMX-E10 makes short work of uploading footage to the Web. It drastically reduces the number of steps needed to successfully upload and share video on various sites such as YouTube. Other hardware specifications include a large, high-performance 1/3.2 inch CMOS sensor which can capture video in full HD resolution as well as 8-megapixel stills, a 2.7″ wide touchscreen LCD display, the mentioned swivel lens, and Smart Filters to produce unique lens and color effects. Available in ivory or black colors, the Samsung HMX-E10 will hit the market this September for $199.99 a pop.
