Motorola Droid 2 Could Launch as Early as August 12, R2-D2 Along for the Ride

Well, it’s one of those days, apparently. Despite the fact we just heard yesterday that the Droid 2 would probably launch on August 23rd, here’s your first contradictory statement about the matter at hand. According to a trusted source of Engadget’s, it sounds like the Droid 2 is actually going to have a soft launch on August 12th. Why a soft launch? Well, that’s where that August 23rd part comes in, strangely enough.

Droid 2 R2D2 Motorola Droid 2 Could Launch as Early as August 12, R2 D2 Along for the Ride

According to the source, the device will indeed hit store shelves on the 12th, but the heavy marketing for the new device won’t actually kick off until August 23rd. Strange, especially considering the advertising muscle behind the DROID line-up of devices, but obviously they’ve got some kind of plan. And hopefully Verizon loves it as much as another person when a plan comes together.

Now, that R2-D2 part. Apparently, there’s going to be a sorts of “special edition” handset, where there’s going to be a white R2-D2 on the back of the Droid 2. Yes. On the back of the Droid 2, there will be a representation of R2-D2 from Star Wars. But, it also makes perfect sense, considering that the DROID name is actually a registered trademark of Lucasfilms, so why not actually get into the graphic side of it, too? Engadget doesn’t know if the special edition variation will launch hand-in-hand with the “standard” handset. What would you go for? A no R2-D2 version, or one that’s sporting the little droid?

iPad Projector Displays Objects in 3D

A Japanese design team named Aircord Labo just released a video showing their 3D projection system for the iPad. The rig is still at the proof of concept level, and requires some special hardware, but it’s already pretty promising: viewers can move around the system and view objects/images as if they were floating in space. No release date has been announced yet.

Note: This video will not play on an iPad

Motorola Droid 2 Launching With Android 2.2, Spy Shots Suggest

Okay, today’s getting ridiculous. Apparently now that the Droid X is out, the Droid 2 is trying to make up for some lost time in the spotlight. So, right on the heels of seeing a freshly leaked image of the Droid 2 running Android 2.2 in its Settings screen, we get this spy-shot of an internal Verizon system. What’s it say? Well, you guessed it: The Droid 2 will launch with Android 2.2. Are we surprised by this? No, not at all. Like we’ve said in the past, we imagine that if the Droid 2 is launching anywhere near the end of August (between August 12th and August 23rd are the tentative dates at this point), then it makes perfect sense. The Droid X is scheduled to see the update around the same time, and if they both run the same “skin,” then seeing one launch with the update while the other one gets it OTA style, well, that just makes sense. It’s good to see the Droid 2 launch with Android 2.2. That means it’s running in the family, more or less, to see major Operating System upgrades launching on high profile devices. Of course, whether or not you think the Droid 2 is actually a high profile device is purely up to you, but with that 1GHz processor under the hood, and a revamped keyboard to make it something like “great” compared to the original’s, we’d imagine many people would think the upgrade is perfectly suited for “high profile.” ) View full post on Android Community

Raytheon pain gun gets set to Afghanistan, then sent back

7 17 10 raytheonpaingun 300x209 Raytheon pain gun gets set to Afghanistan, then sent backIt has been a while since we have reported on the Raytheon’s pain inducing gun.

The military has been working on this device for years for “a more broad application for crowd control and interdiction which is known as the Active Denial System. Capable of inflicting limitless, unbearable pain, the ADS can unleash a wave of agony upon a force or crowd from a distance of over 250 meters.”

This device was taken over to Afghanistan, but my source has just said with an update that it has been returned to the United States without ever being used.

My source also says that the unit was “plagued by technical and safety issues for years, not to mention political concerns”. Gee, you really think so? After all, it is a device that can induce pain, on a massive scale! This is like a weapon of mass agonization. By the way, agonization is not a word, but I can’t really think of a word of bringing pain to another, unless it is torture.

Yeah, I’m guessing a weapon to make pain for torture is going to create some problems. I can see why it was returned unused.

I wonder what it would be like to be on the end of this pain gun. Maybe I don’t want to know.

Chatimals keeps the resident chatterbox quiet

chatimals Chatimals keeps the resident chatterbox quietChatimals could very well be the next best thing your household could have if your little one seems to be the chatterbox in the family. You will be able to choose from a dinky looking hamster or a meerkat friend depending on your taste, where it is smart enough to retain whatever you say to it, repeating incessantly in a slightly patronizing voice. Want them to speak up? Just give their tiny paws a gentle squeeze and you’re good to go, where anything they hear will be spoken back to you. Of course, it might just keep your toddler who is now learning to speak quiet, but that remains to be seen as he/she might just get frustrated at the Chatimal in question, ripping out an arm or a leg in desperation to be the resident top dog where the chatterbox category is concerned. You can choose from either grey, beige or ginger shades for the hamster, while the meerkat has only one color – brown. At £19.99 each, they’re certainly worth checking out if you want to purchase a toy for your little one.

Motorola i1 is new Nextel Direct Connect Smartphone

Motorola i1 is new Nextel Direct Connect SmartphoneFancy an Android-powered Nextel Direct Connect Smartphone? Well, you can get your digs with the Motorola i1, a spanking new Android-powered smartphone which won’t cost you more than $150, albeit coming with a 2-year contract. This is a world’s first just in case you were wondering, where it will hit the market in the US this coming July 25th. The Motorola i1 is no pushover when it comes to smartphones in terms of ruggedness, as you can tell by its solid body construction that adheres to military specifications when it comes to protection against dust, shock, vibration and blowing rain, making the Motorola i1 an ideal smartphone for folks who work and play hard. There is one downside to all of this though – the Motorola i1 runs on Android 1.5 which frankly, is old hat and won’t even support most of the more modern apps available these days, making us wonder just what Sprint is up to.

Of course, not all is doom and gloom even with Android 1.5 running on it (although we would have liked to have an assurance of an update coming our way in the near future), as the Motorola i1 will come with a range of robust business and entertainment applications that can be downloaded off the Android Market thanks to its integrated Wi-Fi capability. You will be able to reorganize your life better thanks to applications such as Scan2PDF Mobile 2.0, Unit Converter – ConvertPad and RealCalc Scientific Calculator and Facebook or Twitter support. Not only that, there are Sprint partner applications that is available for businesses on the Motorola i1 which include the Xora mobile workforce management solution which enables businesses to have real-time visibility into field operations, while helping to automate payroll and job workflow processes.

Apart from that, you can also access your Microsoft Office files on the go thanks to Microsoft Document Viewer, with a 5-megapixel camera to capture beautiful moments when you do not have a dedicated digital camera handy. A 3.1″ HVGA screen, microSD memory card slot and Flash 8 support are part of the other specifications. You up for a new rugged phone? We admit, for a rugged handset, it is quite the looker.
