Samsung Fascinate Still Coming to Verizon, Just Not Soon

So, the Motorola Droid X is launching tomorrow. And, to be honest, we were actually just about ready to put up a post trying to determine which device all of you were more excited about. Which device you were going to slap your hard earned money down for. But then this happened. And well, considering the news we think we may already know the answer. Though, feel free to voice your opinion anyway (Droid X or Fascinate). According to Verizon, it doesn’t look like the largest wireless company in the United States knows when they’re launching the highly anticipated Super AMOLED handset. We showed you a Verizon Summer catalog yesterday, and while the focus was on the Droid X and Droid 2 (which is all well and good, in of itself), there was one device missing from the summer releases: the Fascinate. So, obviously some folks got pretty curious. After getting in touch with the company, Android and Me has shed some light on the situation. According to the representative they spoke with, Verizon has every intention of launching the handset, but they just don’t know when that’s going to happen. No date determined for the launch, while every other major carrier is hard at work getting their own out (in fact, one of them launches tomorrow ). What’s worse, is that Verizon apparently is planning for “late Summer or early Fall.” And, well, “late” Summer is still the Summer, and so we’re going to go ahead and assume that it’s going to be some time in the Fall. And if you’re anything like us, you hate waiting. We’re hoping Verizon clarifies this sooner than later — we want our hands on this handset. SmartDevices SmartQ T7 and T7-3G Android 2.1 tablets debut

SmartDevices are no strangers to Android tablets, and the company has just outed its latest two models.  The SmartDevices SmartQ T7 and SmartQ T7-3G each run Android 2.1 on a 7-inch touchscreen, with the latter model also throwing in 3G connectivity (in various flavors).

smartdevices smartq t7 t7 3g 540x389 SmartDevices SmartQ T7 and T7 3G Android 2.1 tablets debut

According to SmartDevices, both support up to 1080p HD video thanks to a 720MHz ARM11 processor and 3D hardware graphics acceleration.  There’a also a 4,700mAh battery and WiFi, though while the Android Market is shown on the screenshots we’re not 100-percent certain whether either tablet will actually get access to the marketplace.

The SmartQ T7 is unpriced at present, but SmartDevices has confirmed that the CDMA EVDO version of the SmartQ T7-3G will be 1,880 Yuan ($278) while the WCDMA SmartQ T7-3G will be 1,980 Yuan ($292).  No word on release dates at this stage.

HTC HD2 gets Android 2.2 Froyo and Desire’s 2.1 Sense ROMs [Video]

The HD2 is another piece of endearing solid, discretely handsome HTC hardware, but its native Windows Mobile OS would normally make it unwelcome here at Android Community.  Thanks to the handiwork of xda-developers, however, HD2 owners can now get a shot of frozen yoghurt instead of their Microsoft dose; they’ve managed to port Android 2.2 Froyo onto the HD2.

If Froyo isn’t to your taste, there’s also an Android 2.1 build with the same HTC Sense UI as on the Desire available.  There are still issues with each, including audio issues during calls and – on the Froyo build – some 3G problems, so these may not be everyday ROMs for you, but the good news is that the 1GHz Snapdragon processor in the HD2 keeps them running as slickly as you’d find on a Nexus One or Desire.

Road-Trip-Bingo HD – Summer Travel Series

Road Trip Bingo HD Road Trip Bingo HD – Summer Travel Series“Are we there yet?” – four words parents dread hearing when traveling with their kids. If you’re hitting the road for vacation this summer and you’ll have kids in the backseat, Road-Trip-Bingo HD for the iPad will keep them entertained while you’re on the go.

BINGO is a fun, timeless game kids love to play and this app brings it to the digital level. We all know the overall concept, cover five squares in a row and you win. BINGO!  A bonus to this Road Trip version is, it’s actually a little easier because it doesn’t require anyone to draw and call out numbers.

When the app is started, users get the option of one or two players on the iPad. Select one and play by yourself or get your little brother to play against you using another iPad. Don’t have two iPads, not a problem! Two players can share the same iPad with the screen split down the middle and two different BINGO boards showing.

Each board shows 25 squares containing small pictures of things kids might see while riding in the car. When they spot one of the items on their board, they simply tap the picture and a purple dot appears. Make sure they continue to pay attention as you drive and tap the corresponding pictures on the board for objects in “real life” they’ve been able to locate. Once they’ve have five dots in a row, they win. It’s that easy!

At $1.99, Road-Trip-Bingo HD is an easy way to supply backseat entertainment during a long summer trip or short jaunt around town, and if you’re lucky it’ll keep the “Are we there yets?” to a minimum.

Opera Mini 5.1 for Android released [Video]

Opera has pushed out a new version of their eponymous browser for Android.  Available free in the Android Market, Opera Mini 5.1 uses the company’s server-side compression system to shrink down requested webpages by up to 90-percent; that means smaller download sizes, preserving your data allowance, and faster loading. There’s also tabbed browsing, a password manager, bookmarks and Speed Dial, and you can now set the Opera Mini browser to be the default (unlike the previous beta).  The company has tweaked page layouts to suit the new breed of big-screen Android devices, too. Click here to view the embedded video. Press Release: Lightning fast browsing on Android phones Opera Mini 5.1 for Android released Oslo, Norway – July 14, 2010 – Opera spreads the love to Android mobile phone users. Opera Mini 5.1 is now available for phones built on the Android platform, offering better browsing performance and improved user experience. With over 61 million users worldwide, Opera Mini is the world’s most popular browser for mobile phones, allowing much faster browsing speeds, while keeping the costs to a minimum. Browse at lightning speed today by downloading the free Opera Mini browser from the Android Market or at m.opera.com. Opera Mini is a favorite not just on feature phones, but also on smartphones, scoring an impressive 1 million downloads on the iPhone during the first 24 hours of availability. Opera Mini is highly optimized for almost any handset, delivering the best Internet experience on more than 3000 mobile phone models. Opera Mini raises the game on Android phones. Since its Opera Mini 5 beta release, Opera Mini can now be set as the default browser for more convenient Internet access. Opera Mini 5.1 also offers improved page layout on high-end Android handsets with large screens. What we say “Opera Mini 5.1 for the Android platform is the next step in bringing the world’s most popular mobile web browser to all major platforms, offering improved performance and great web experience to almost any handset,” says Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “Opera Mini is used by over 61 million people on more than 3000 handset models and with today’s release Opera continues its mission to provide the best web experience on any device and on any platform.” About Opera Mini Opera Mini brings the Web to almost any handset by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the phone. This results in significantly improved page loading speed and reduced data costs for the user. For example, with webpages such as BBC.com, a normal mobile web browser will display a BBC News page roughly 1 time, as compared to 9 times with Opera Mini for the same cost. In addition to providing speed and cost savings, Opera Mini 5.1 comes with useful features, such as tabbed browsing, password manager, bookmarks and Speed Dial, built into the browser to deliver easy web access while on-the-go. With Opera Mini optimized for Android phones, more people are able to get a PC-like browsing experience on their handsets. Download Download Opera Mini directly to your Android phone for free from the Android Market, or at m.opera.com. Motorola locking DROID X and DROID 2 bootloaders

Motorola has disappointed ROM-tinkerers with the news that, unlike the Motorola DROID, future Android smartphones from the company won’t be supplied with open bootloaders.  Instead, Motorola will be “securing” the software on handsets like the DROID X and DROID 2, making loading custom ROMs significantly more difficult.

DROID X hands on 17 slashgear 540x400 Motorola locking DROID X and DROID 2 bootloaders

The company says their justification is “driven by a number of different business factors” and that is common practice; the DROID having an open bootloader, in fact, is described as being done for “a specific business reason” though that is not detailed.  ”The use of open source software, such as the Linux kernel or the Android platform, in a consumer device does notrequire the handset running such software to be open for re-flashing” the company points out, highlighting that Motorola does “comply with the licenses, including GPLv2, for each of the open source packages in our handsets.”

Taranis, the unmanned Stealth Jet from BAE Systems

taranis ucav thumb 550xauto 42645 300x168 Taranis, the unmanned Stealth Jet from BAE SystemsThis is the Taranis, defense contractor BAE Systems’ version of Boeing’s Phantom Ray Unmanned aircraft that we reported about a while ago.

I’ve included a video after the jump to show a recent British newscast about it, and they say that there isn’t much they can tell you about it due to confidential military secrets and all. The CG animation of it is quite lame, actually.

To be honest, they had me at it can strike targets on another continent. Okay, that is just more than a little scary, especially when this thing has this weird red window on the front. Is this supposed to be an homage to the Cylons of Battlestar Galactica or KITT from Knight Rider? The name of Taranis sounds a lot like Tardis from Doctor Who.

You know what it reminds me of? Stealth. Yes, that mediocre movie with Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel, and Jamie Foxx as three super cool fighter pilots who have a fourth automated pilot join them. When the robot fighter goes rogue, the action begins.

Yeah, I can think of several science fiction stories with that premise, but it really is sort of scary that the stage is being set for that situation to take place.

The ElliptiGO combines running and biking

cornering 300x199 The ElliptiGO combines running and bikingThis is the ElliptiGO, a bike that combines running and cycling, designed for low-impact but high-output workouts.

It was created by a former cyclist and Ironman triathlete who suffered hip and knee injuries. The ElliptiGO is designed to help runners avoid “beating up their bodies through repeated impact” as well as “position riders ‘out of the saddle’ and using their weight to generate torque with every stride”.

A recent video of the Early Show that you can view at my Source link shows weatherman Dave Price riding it. While he is riding, he states that “it feels so natural” despite the ElliptiGO’s spokesperson saying “that’s not proper technique”. I have another video of it that you can watch after the jump.

The ElliptiGO weighs in at 40 pounds, and is capable of speeds up to 15 to 25 miles per hour. It has eight shifting speeds, and braking is possible with hand levers. You will note how the mechanisms look like the arms of a swimmer doing freestyle.

According to my Source, the ElliptiGO costs about $2,200, and is available in blue, green, and black. I’m not certain if twenty-two hundred dollars is going to be too much. I would have to really know what kind of body I am going to get by using this product before I make a purchase that high.
