Android 2.2 SDK Gets Updated by Google

This one’s quick — pretty much everything’s in the title, anyway. But, today Google announced that they’ve updated the Android 2.2 (Froyo) SDK. Actually, they announced the availability of a “new” Android 2.2 SDK, which is what they usually do for the updated version of the Software Developer Kit, but don’t think it’s all that new. While the original SDK has been available since the official Froyo announcement back at Google’s I/O conference, we all know that Google’s been releasing new builds of Froyo ever since — which have become available for download on the Nexus One (and Motorola Droid, subsequently). This update brings the official Froyo code to its final build, which corresponds to that official update that the Nexus One received over the air just a few days back. OpenFeint Bringing Social Gaming Network to Android

There’s no one out there that would say the Android Market doesn’t have apps. It’s got plenty of apps. Unfortunately, though, despite the gaming prowess that most of our high-end devices have, there’s still not any killer games out there. Plenty of “good” ones, sure, but nothing that stands out amongst the crowd. Especially when the crowd includes Apple’s App Store. But, that’s about to change, as one of the largest social gaming networks that has thrived in the App Store for quite some time is finally making their jump to Android.

OpenFeint, which connects players through multiple titles, will bring a whole new level of gaming to the Android mobile Operating System. By providing titles, as well as chat-based systems that will allow folks to communicate with other players, gaming is about to get a huge boost from one of the best development teams out there. And, hopefully that means other developers out there will want to get in on the action, too, which should bolster the gaming development on the platform as a whole. Go ahead and read the full press release below.

Motorola Backflip Undergoing OTA Software Update

Right about now, hopefully, if you’ve got yourself a Motorola Backflip sitting around, you might be getting prompted to download a brand new software update. But, don’t get too excited — this isn’t Android 2.1. No, this is just a software update to get a handle on a few more bugs that plague the device.

Motorola Backflip Motorola Backflip Undergoing OTA Software Update

The bug fixes are for the system itself, which should improve the overall functionality of the device. Other bonus features include improvements to messaging, the camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and more. As is usual for an OTA update, you’ll be notified as soon as the update’s made its way through its phases and found itself on your device. No official word on how long the update will take to reach all devices, but we don’t imagine it should take long. Let us know in the comments as soon as you get yours, and what you notice has changed.

Samsung Vibrant for T-Mobile Hitting Shelves July 15th?

When the Samsung Vibrant was initially announced, it was confirmed by Samsung that the 4-inch Super AMOLED display, Android 2.1, 1GHz Hummingbird processor-based device would be available for T-Mobile customer purchase starting July 21st. And, as far as we could tell, there wasn’t anything wrong with that date at all. Then again, Motorola’s got their own launch happening on July 15th, with the Droid X ready to change everything all over again, so maybe Samsung saw that as a bit of a road block. Well, if rumors are true, then that’s about to get a bit more interesting. When this rumor first broke, last night, it was simply just rumor: basically, an anonymous tipster said “something,” to the effect that the Vibrant would be released on July 15th. It didn’t get interesting until a leaked T-Mobile internal document hit the scene, and thanks to the fine folks over at Tmo News , that leaked document made its way to the Internet. And, sure enough, it says that “on July 15th, T-Mobile is scheduled to launch the Samsung Vibrant.” Doesn’t get more clear-cut than that, we imagine. But, yes, this could be a major typo, too, so make sure you’ve got some salt near you at all times. So, what’s the benefit of launching the Vibrant pretty much a week earlier than expected? For one, the Droid X by Motorola is launching on the nation’s largest wireless carrier. That’s going to be a huge release, no matter what stick you shake at it, so it would be good for T-Mobile to jump on the “big Android phone-packing” bandwagon. Especially considering the Vibrant’s got a few more features that some people may consider better than the Motorola adversary’s. So, now it’s up to all of you: if the Vibrant does indeed launch on the 15th, and you’ve got an option, which are you choosing? [ via Tmo News] ) View full post on Android Community

Nexus One gets Ubuntu install [Video]

The Nexus One may be the first to get new releases of Android 2.x, but it’s also one of the first to get a usable install of Ubuntu.  NexusOneHacks have a massively comprehensive tutorial showing how to get the usually desktop-bound OS onto the 1GHz smartphone.

Usefully, the Ubuntu install doesn’t wipe the original Android OS, but lives alongside it: the Ubuntu terminal runs in the background, while the Ubuntu X11 GUI runs as an app under Android’s VNC client.  If you’re currently asking “why would I want to do this?” then you should probably stick to what’s on offer in the Android Market, but if you’ve ever wanted a portable Ubuntu test server then here’s your chance.  A tutorial suited to the HTC EVO 4G is also promised.

Philips Energy Efficient Kettle

Philips Energy Efficient 1.7 ltr Kettle 400x400 Philips Energy Efficient Kettle

When it comes to cutting back on the amount of energy you use, it’s a game of cutting small corners in every area.  If you boil water for your tea, this Philips Kettle is yet another corner you can cut.  It makes the art of boiling water a whole lot more precise and therefore cutting back on the amount of energy you use while boiling.

The energy efficient kettle has a measuring guide that lets you know just how many cups of water are within it.  Thanks to the flat heating element it boils the water much faster and uses less energy.  It’s also easy to clean thanks to that same flat element.  To let you know when it’s done, the light stays on while the kettle is doing its work and kicks off when the water is boiling.
