Gingerbread May Not be Everything We Heard About

According to Unwired View , the news about Gingerbread is not fully right. According to Dan Morrill, a Google Android Open Source & Compatibility Tech Lead, it seems that people are starting to just make stuff up on the subject of Android 3.0. But, that doesn’t mean everything is wrong, either. There is still the possibility that some, maybe even most, of the information on Android 3.0 is true. The truth is, there is no way anybody will know what exactly Google is planning until someone from Google takes the time to make an announcement. We wish most of the information about Android 3.0 were real, but for now, we’ve got to keep our salt in our hands, ready to throw. [ via UnwiredView] ) View full post on Android Community

Motorola Droid Getting Android 2.2 on July 13th, Rumor Suggests

We’ll put this out there first: The Motorola Droid X launches on the Verizon network on July 15th. With that being said, a new rumor has popped up that suggests Motorola is all set to release the official Android 2.2 for the original Droid on July 13th. The reason we wanted to point out that the Droid X is coming out two days after the supposed release of Froyo, is because that can either work in favor of the rumor, or against it.

As we all know, the Android 2.1 update for the original Droid didn’t go over too well. But, even when it did launch, the Over the Air launch rolled out as they normally do: gradually. There’s enough Droid users out there that getting Froyo to all of them through an OTA in two days just won’t happen — but it’s a good thought. Giving them a huge OS upgrade during the launch of the next best Droid device is a pretty good idea.

To further the rumor, we know that July has already been mentioned in tandem with the update to the Droid. So, while we may have been thinking the end of July would have been a bit more timely, we can always hope that Motorola’s planning a little ahead of some unknown schedule (unknown to us, of course). Anyone else want to put their two cents in?

Bright Bright for iPad – App Review

Go retro with the new iPad app from Arik Devens called Bright Bright – Draw with glowing light pegs.  When I was a kid, I could spend hours punching little colorful pegs into the black holes on my Lite Brite and create all sorts of wonderful pictures.  I must also admit, I’ve never purchased one for my own kids because the little pegs were just one more thing to add to the clutter of Polly Pockets, Barbie accessories and any mixture of small toy pieces. Enter Bright Bright , the easy-to-use digital version of colorful pegs and creative pictures I’m happy for my kids to use.

The Bright Bright screen includes a black “peg board” with a variety of tools laid out across the top.  Users have access to 7 peg color choices, different picture stencils, a light switch and more.  Kids can create pictures using pre-made stencils or design original pieces of art. Once their finished, flip the light switch on and watch the pictures glow.  Add an interesting effect with the Color Wave feature and watch the colors of your work change before your eyes.

It’ll take a little while to complete a stencil but don’t worry if you’re not able to finish your project in one sitting, using the Save and Load features lets you go back to your work anytime.  Then show off your favorite pictures by saving them to photos or emailing them to grandma.

Bright Bright takes a toy idea that’s been around for years and goes digital.  It’s sure to help fight the hours of summer boredom for kids everywhere!

Get started with a new template.

Completed template.

Picture with the lights on!

What we liked: It’s easy to use, requires some concentration to complete templates and keeps kids busy for hours.  We also liked watching the effects of the Color Wave feature.

What we didn’t like: Would like to have more templates.  (Hopefully they will come with time.)

To buy or not to buy: Yes, my kids have really enjoyed this app and for $1.99, I don’t think you can go wrong.

Interactive ‘in-app’ iAds Video Demonstration

Some applications on the App Store are already showcasing interactive ads supported by Apple’s new iAd platform. However, not all apps in the iAd network are displaying ads. Some of the apps are displaying a placeholder banner that will read “iAd”. All of these new interactive ads bring you a rich experience to make sure you get as much information as possible. The idea is to get more ads inside developers’ apps with the hope all advertisements will be more compelling to you without the need to leave an app or launch a separate browser to interact with them. The following video shows you the new experience on an iPhone. Keep in mind that in the fall (November) this type of experience will be coming to your iPad as part of the iOS 4 update. Verizon DROID Incredible 720p HD recording & 3G hotspot incoming?

Looks like the Verizon DROID Incredible isn’t quite ready to be overshadowed by the incoming DROID X.  Over at AndroidForums, a user with a test Incredible has supposedly spotted a firmware update that adds 720p HD video recording and 3G WiFi hotspot functionality to the HTC-made smartphone.

That certainly isn’t available on the DROID Incredible presently, and HTC have been tight-lipped about the potential for their inclusion when asked previously.  No word on when – or indeed even if – the new firmware will get rolled out to general users.
