WaterField Designs iPad Cases – Accessory Review
Now that summer is here, you’re probably looking for case options for your iPad before you hit the road. Even if you’re not planning a vacation, you’ve made an investment on a device that will be your companion on the road, into work and even into bed. As your new toy is jostled, passed around and gripped along the way, the appropriate case will become a key component in your daily life. Recently, many of our readers have written us asking about suggestions for quality cases that make it easy to carry your iPad wherever you go. In this article we review a couple of products from WaterField that can fit different aspects of your lifestyle. WaterField is an all-American made San Francisco company dedicated to the design and production of cases, bags, sleeves, and pouches. They have recently brought their expertise into the iPad world. The Smart Case The design may look simple, but when you touch this case you will quickly find out that it comes with multi-layered padding, which protects your iPad from any kind of impact. This case is made of nylon. It’s a heavy grade and high quality nylon. The texture is rugged, highly water resistant and very cleanable. When you hold this case you will notice it does have a solid grip. The stitching is internal so there are no threads to catch on anything, and the bottom seam is stitched in a lattice pattern for maximum strength. I’ve seen many sleeve cases in the market. The only concern I have with sleeve cases is whether or not my iPad will be protected and sealed in. I’ve seen some sleeve cases where the iPad may slip out if you’re not careful. That is not the case with WaterField’s Smart Case. The iPad slips in very easily from the top. The case is well fitted and tightly grips your iPad. To slide your iPad back out there is a leather tab stitched to the bottom of the Smart Case, which makes it easy to remove your tablet. Both sides of the Smart Case are very thick, and made of soft leather adding some extra padding and a touch of luxury to the case. All Smart Cases come with a low-profile pocket that can hold your sync/charging cable, power adapter, wallet and more. It provides some finishing touches to this case that allows you to just grab your iPad and go anywhere without worrying about carrying a bag. The Smart Case is available in different stylish colors – Green, Flame, Copper, Pine, Pearl, Black. What we liked: Provides great protection and rigid insert for your iPad. At under-an-inch thin, this case sports luxurious padding to keep your iPad snug and secure, yet quickly accessible. Very light and no visible stitching. What we didn’t like: We found nothing that would be a major concern with this case. This is a very well made iPad sleeve case. Perhaps, a suggestion would be to provide more color options (just as a personal preference). To buy or not to buy: If you’re looking for sleeve case options, this is one you should definitely check out. The attention to detail, the way it feels and its quality makes the Smart Case a must buy for your iPad! The Smart Case is available at WaterField for $59. German Government Cracks Down on Apple’s GPS Use
The German Government has gone on the offensive against Apple’s gathering of GPS location information from iPad and iPhone owners. According to a report by German magazine “Der Spiegel“, German Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger said Apple must “immediately lay out” what personal data is collected, how long it’s stored and what Apple is doing with the data.
Germany has some of the strictest privacy laws of any country in the world. The German Datenschutz (Data Protection) laws are very specific on what user data may be collected or stored and how the user is informed of the data collection practice.
Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger said “Users of iPhones and other GPS capable devices must know what personal information is being collected” and that it would be “unthinkable” if Apple truly was tracking personal and identifiable profile or location data.
Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs, recently took the opportunity to lay out Apple’s position on privacy at this year’s All Things Digital conference. “We take privacy extremely seriously. That’s one of the reasons we have the curated apps store. We have rejected a lot of apps that want to take a lot of your personal data and suck it up into the cloud. Privacy means people know what they’re signing up for. In plain English, and repeatedly, that’s what it means. Ask them. Ask them every time. Make them tell you to stop asking if they get tired of your asking them. Let them know precisely what you’re going to do with their data.”
Apple will now have the opportunity to demonstrate their openness and commitment to customer privacy as they respond to the German government’s request for information.

Hi-Sun Beach Towel with built-in speakers

When you go to the beach there are just certain essentials that tend to go with you. The beach towel is an absolute must, plus it’s kind of nice to have a little music to go with you as well. Which is where this Hi-Sun towel could come in very handy and keep the items you have to pack pretty minimal. Plus this thankfully comes in some gender neutral colors, so guys can pick one up too if they like the towel.
As you might have guessed, the towel has a 3.5mm universal jack for your iPhone, iPod or any other type of MP3 player out there. The very strange thing about these speakers is that they don’t really mention if these are at all waterproof or even water-resistant. However, they are removable, so if you need to move them out of the way until you’re damp instead of dripping wet, you do have that option. This comes in pink, blue, black and red. You can pick up the 100% cotton towel for 59,00EUR or about $72.

Solar Spark Lighter

This is one of those camping gadgets that is interesting and if you could get used to the change, could be very handy. It’s not something that’s really an option in an area lacking light, but if you have a whole lot of sunlight it’ll save you from having to carry around a constant supply of matches. Plus, unlike matches if something liquid spills in with your camping gear, it can still be used.
It’s made of stainless steel and is therefore very durable, so it can handle those harsh conditions. Plus it can be used time and time again unlike other fire starters like lighter fluid. The disk itself uses a parabolic mirror and the shape makes it so the light is focused in a small area. That makes it so that it will catch anything on fire that is between the two prongs. It can even be used for frivolous things like incense. It’s pocket size and can be purchased for $19.95 from Solar Sphere.

eMachines Mini-e Home Entertainment Center

eMachines has rolled out one of the zanier small form factor desktops to date, known as the Mini-e Home Entertainment Center. Don’t be surprised by its size – it might be as small and thick as a small book, but it packs quite a punch where home theater PCs are concerned. Featuring a unique glossy black diamond shaped chassis that seemingly “floats” in a matte silver pedestal, it is capable of emitting a soft ambient green glow along the lower edge for that added touch of class whenever it is powered and ready to go. The eMachines Mini-e measures 7.1″ in diameter, tipping the scales at a mere 9 pounds which would make it rather dangerous for you to have a cat or lumbering dog around the home since either one could easily knock over the Mini-e while it is running. More on it in the extended post.
The slim and compact Mini-e ER1402 will certainly be more than able to offer full HD multimedia entertainment as well as every day computing capabilities, making it suitable not only in the living area but in the study as well, especially if you’re starved for space. After all, with its capability of being able to be snapped onto the back of most monitors or TVs, is portability at home personified. It doesn’t require a genius to get the entire setup up and running, while built-in 802.11 b/g/n wireless connectivity makes it a snap to get on the Internet straightaway. With its HDMI interface, you can hook it up to a large screen TV while an S/PDIF port allows the system to digitally connect to a home audio system. Other hardware that comes with it include a wireless keyboard and mouse, letting you play popular Flash-based social media games, surf the web, view and edit photos, stream video content from Netflix or Hulu, or watch HD movies comfortably from the sofa.
It will run on the Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system, with an AMD Athlon II NEO processor making sure the proceedings go on smoothly. Graphics-wise, an NVIDIA GeForce 9200 graphics card ought to do the job just fine, while 2GB RAM is available for the Mini-e ER1402 to handle basic, everyday computing tasks, which include (but are not limited to) word processing, VOIP calls, email, spreadsheets or managing family finances. Other features include a quartet of USB 2.0 ports, a multi-in-one digital media card reader and a 160GB hard drive. At $299.99 a pop, this is definitely worth considering if you’re looking for a casual computer in your home.

Lizard-style bot ‘swims’ through sand, straight into your worst nightmare
While robots still struggle to do basic things like hang out with us or bring us cookies, it’s comforting to know that the variety of locomotion methods for this burgeoning race shows no sign of slowing. The latest of these “this would be a cool way for a robot to make its way through a disaster site and rescue people” solutions is a robot from a team at the Georgia Institute of Technology that can “swim” through sand, much like a lizard. Sand’s a bit of a toughie, in case you’ve never found out for yourself in an ill-fated game of sand volleyball, thanks to its combo of solid and fluid dynamics. The spandex-clad, squirmy solution uncovered by Georgia Tech gets along nicely, however, going mainly with the fluid approach. Check it creeping creepily on video after the break.
