Subway Map to the Auto World – Click above for high-res image gallery

Five years ago, CAR created a subway-style map of every major automaker, its brands and sub-brands, along with its technological partners, spin-offs and related relationships. It was enough to make our head explode, but the map made deciphering the incestuous relationship between the world’s automakers a bit easier.

In its latest issue, CAR has updated the map for 2010, including every major and minor automaker and how each are tied together. The Brit pub admits they’ve taken a decidedly Western perspective, leaving out some of the odder marques and a few brands from emerging markets, but even then SAIC and Tata are in the mix, along with Fisker and Maybach.

Obviously, General Motors’ brands have been paired down in the last five years, but before the mag went to print, they weren’t able to update the map with the so-to-be-shuttered Mercury marque. And yes, they’ve got Porsche as a sub-group within Volkswagen and the newly-minted partnership between Toyota and Tesla as well.

Check both the original and upgraded maps in the gallery below, and make sure to view them in high-res to get the complete perspective.

Droid X Does Gaming Too

The Droid X comes with a very nice 4.3″ screen, this makes it a very good gaming phone. The games expected should be smooth and fast, and that is exactly what was witnessed. The Motorla event, held in New York, displayed the Droid X’s great gaming ability that was expected.

The specs shouldn’t be worried about too much considering it has a 1GHz processor. The Droid X also has a dedicated GPU, with this very good hardware, the Droid X will be one of the best gaming phones available. The speed “is very, very fast” and we imagine that there will be plenty more videos out showcasing this in no time.

HTC Forced to Switch to Super TFT LCD From AMOLED Due to Shortages

The Droid Incredible is still one of Verizon Wireless’ most hotly desired devices, and despite the fact the handset is still on back-order, people are still buying them. One of the reasons for that, other than the 1GHz Snapdragon processor under the hood and Android 2.1 with HTC’s Sense UI, is the fact that it features a 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display. We just got a tip that suggests that’s not the case anymore. We all know why the Incredible isn’t in a lot more people’s hands, or still flying off shelves: the display. Samsung has reportedly been having trouble supplying HTC with the necessary equipment to outfit their Incredible device (pun slightly intended) with the AMOLED display. But, ironically enough, they haven’t been having any trouble with their own devices, even the ones that feature Super AMOLED displays. According to OLED Display , Samsung Mobile Display cannot supply enough displays for their AMOLED-equipped devices. So, Google’s left with only one choice, it seems: Switch over to Super TFT LCD, which is produced by Sony. This is forcing HTC and Google to replace the displays in future HTC Desire and HTC Incredible handsets, due to the short supply. But, the big question is: what is Super TFT LCD? Well, you’ve actually heard of it before, because it has a nickname that’s come up recently in the news (after the announcement of a certain tablet). Super TFT LCD’s nickname is IPS. Which, yes, became “famous” thanks to Apple’s iPad tablet. It provides a wide viewing angle, and provides very clear images — even if the colors aren’t as “distinguished” when compared to an AMOLED display. Simply put, Samsung needs their factories putting out AMOLED and Super AMOLED displays for their own devices, like the Samsung Galaxy S/Captivate/Vibrant, or the Samsung Wave (all of which feature the latter, not the former). So, it seems that everyone else that uses the same technology is getting the shaft. Of course, this could just be a rumor amongst rumors, and here in the near future production could get kick started again. If this is indeed true, though, well — future Incredible owners may not be the happiest campers in the woods. [ via OLED Display; thanks Erik!] ) View full post on Android Community

Four Android Phones to be offered by US Cellular in 2010

Four phones are planned to be brought to customers throughout the year. This will start off next year with the Samsung Acclaim. The first phone, the slide phone QWERTY will come out July 9th, shortly followed by the HTC Desire. The devices and manufacturers for the other two is yet to be decided by US Cellular. US Cellular quite possibly might wait until the last 3 months of the year to decide on their options, a good number of phones will be released from now until then. A guess on what they’ll pick would have to be the Samsung Galaxy S. Lately it seems that every time you hear about it, a newer version is being released.
