Senate designates July 9, 2010 Collector Car Appreciation Day

Filed under: Classics , Etc. , Government/Legal Cruise night is America - Click above for high-res image gallery If you’re a collector-car owner, or simply one of the millions of Americans who celebrates the hobby by attending local car shows, weekly cruise-ins, and the like, you might want to make a special point of hitting your favorite Friday-night old-car haunt three weeks from now. That’s because the United States Senate unanimously passed Senate Resolution 513 last month, officially designating July 9, 2010 as Collector Car Appreciation Day. The resolution, co-sponsored by Senators Jon Tester (D-MT) and Richard Burr (R-NC), states “that the collection and restoration of historic and classic cars is an important part of preserving the technological achievements and cultural heritage of the United States.” Moreover, the text of the resolution points out that the hobby and the myriad related businesses supporting it provide jobs for people across all 50 states. In observance of the occasion, the resolution “encourages the people of the United States to engage in events and commemorations of `Collector Car Appreciation Day’ that create opportunities for collector car owners to educate young people on the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of the United States, including through the collection and restoration of collector cars.” It’s easy to dismiss resolutions like this as pure frivolity, especially in the face of more pressing matters facing the nation. That said, these things get passed all the time in both houses of Congress, and Sens. Tester and Burr have a point. Not only does the collector car hobby help preserve important bits of Americana, those weekly cruises and shows encourage new generations to get involved and keep the pastime going (along with the industry that exists as a direct result of it). So, on July 9th, grab your family and friends, head to the local cruisers’ gathering point, and celebrate what those men and women are preserving. It’s American history: the kind you don’t generally learn in schoolbooks. It’s become a tradition for us here at Autoblog to head down to Beverly Hills every Father’s Day for the annual Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance. There’s always an eclectic collection of cars, and the people who come to the free event can be entertaining to watch as well.

This year, the show recognized the 75th anniversary of Jaguar, and the British marque brought out an impressive display of cars. The company’s early years were well-represented, with a Jaguar SS 100 from the Petersen Automotive Museum in addition to the XK120, XK140 and XK150. The legendary E-Type was on hand in abundance, including a semi-lightweight racing model. Add to that an XJ220 supercar, the XKR featured in Die Another Day, and even the XK180 concept car. Without a doubt, however, our favorite Jag at the show was a beautiful 1956 D-Type in a classic British Racing Green livery.

Some other highlights of the show included the 1948 Norman Timbs Special that made its debut at Amelia Island earlier this year, as well as the controversial one-of-one Tucker Torpedo Convertible. You can see these and more in our gallery of live photos below.

New UAW president urges picketing Toyota dealers

Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing , Toyota , UAW/Unions No, as a matter of fact, we didn’t think Bob King’s newly minted tenure as UAW president would begin like this. King was elected just last week, and he’s already called for the membership’s first major action: picket their neighborhood Toyota dealers. Why? To put pressure on Toyota to let its U.S. factory employees unionize, especially after the messy closure of the NUMMI facility- and while the UAW is at it, Volkswagen , Honda , Hyundai and Kia factory employees need to unionize as well. The plan is for UAW members to “adopt” a local Toyota dealer and picket in front of it. In a speech, King said, “We’re going to pound on Toyota until they recognize the First Amendment rights of their workers to come into the UAW,” and “We’re going to show these corporations that if they are unjust to our members that they are going to pay a price.” Since dealers are franchise operations that can’t really affect corporate policy, the hope has to be that Toyota will simply wish to avoid more PR hassle and sit down with the union. King is determined to raise membership by getting the import factories unionized (curiously, no mention of Mercedes-Benz or BMW in any reports), as well as suppliers, so that the body has more wage- and concession-bargaining power. And he’s not just looking to auto workers to help with this push - he’s suggested retirees and other non-factory workers help on the picket lines. Of course, American International Automobile Dealers Association has come out with Gatling guns blazing against the move . After a couple of years of Gettelfinger’s quieter realpolitik , an immediate switch to ruckus tactics is a bit of a surprise. But hey, that’s what a president with a landslide victory feels his people want, so let the drums boom. One can only hope that all the noise doesn’t bring the whole house down… [Source: Automotive News - sub req'd | Image: Carlos Osorio/Getty] New UAW president urges picketing Toyota dealers originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 20 Jun 2010 11:03:00 EST. Mini reveals track for Porsche challenge, not really Road Atlanta

minicourse630 Mini reveals track for Porsche challenge, not really Road Atlanta

Last we checked, Road Atlanta was a famed professional 2.54-mile racetrack, not an oversized autocross layout on a training skidpad. Somebody may need to remind Mini USA, as the maker of famously small cars has just announced the “track” (their word, not ours) for its overly-publicized “Rumble on the Racetrack” (their title, not ours) challenge pitting the Mini Cooper S against the race-bred Porsche 911 Carrera S.

While Mini promises “No tricks. No gimmicks. No jokes” in its latest Facebook post, the map of the so-called challenge track autocross is nothing more than a few hundred cones dropped on the “School Course & Training Area” located in the infield of Road Atlanta by turns 6 and 7 (this is hardly the same asphalt that hosts cars like the Corvette C6.R, Porsche RS Spyder, Ferrari 430GT and Audi R10 TDI at the Petit Le Mans).

With the big shindig scheduled for Monday (with or without an official Porsche showing), this event has gone from entertaining to mildly disappointing. We don’t need to explain to any of our readers that a Mini Cooper S is as comfortable on a loop-de-doo autocross course as Porsche is, well… on the winner’s podium at Road Atlanta.

Mini has yet to answer the challenge from Hyundai (the Koreans were kind enough to offer to take Porsche’s vacant spot on the grid), but they had better get on it. With a track autocross this tight, they should be expecting a call from Smart first thing Monday morning.

Foosball HD for iPad – App Review

foos1 Foosball HD for iPad – App ReviewIf you’re a Foosball fan, Illusion Labs’ Foosball HD will feel very familiar to you. Illusion Labs always does a great job by adapting their games to the iPad and iPhone devices.

The company’s latest title follows the basic Foosball objective. Use your figures to pass and shoot the ball into your opponent’s goal while blocking the ball from going into your own goal.

The game takes advantage of your iPad’s multi-touch capabilities, and will let you play in a two player mode or single mode. But, the real fun is playing against a human opponent.

Even though your iPad offers a bigger screen than other mobile devices, the game has been designed with three lines per side, including the goalie. You will have control of your own players and can move them using simple swipe controls.

You will be able to use forward and back movements positioning your players on the virtual Foosball table. With a left or right swipe you will be able to spin your players for a chance to score a goal.
