2GHz Motorola Android smartphone tipped for 2010

Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha has revealed his ambitions to produce a 2GHz Android smartphone, with the outspoken exec claiming such a handset would be on the market by the end of 2010.  Jha didn’t specify which processor he had in mind; as far as we’ve heard, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon line – which has become popular among Android devices – will only reach 1.5GHz this year. However, there’s some talk of a 2GHz NVIDIA Tegra chipset being used, though more likely perhaps is some form of ARM’s dual-core Cortex A9, announced late last year .   Other sources suggest that Motorola is looking to “incorporate everything that is technologically possible in a smartphone today,” which has a pretty broad scope.  We’re guessing a hefty camera, HD video and more. ) View full post on Android Community

Report: Nissan to pay directors four times more than Toyota

Filed under: Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Japan, Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Earnings/Financials

ghosn Report: Nissan to pay directors four times more than ToyotaAccording to Bloomberg, Nissan is the place to be a director for a Japanese automaker. According to a new article, Nissan Motor Company hands its directors close to four times the amount of pay as its rival Toyota and three times as much as what Honda directors bring home. Averaged among all of Nissan’s directors, the heads of the company make around $1.5 million per year, compared to around $411,150 for Toyota’s gurus and $529,561 for Honda’s head honchos. Keep in mind those numbers are based on current conversion rates.

So what gives? For one, Nissan is shacked up with Renault at the moment, giving the company a bit of an international flavor and the pay scales that comes along with that association, but a bigger factor may be that Toyota and Honda compensate their heads of state in other ways. Toyota, for example, hands out stock options worth around $171,000 in addition to base salary in order to help make up some of the gap.

Despite the massive amounts of cash heading to Nissan’s directors, the company can’t quite keep up the pace in either profits or sales with its main domestic rivals. The company fell dead last among the big Japanese three in sales for the past year.

iZones for iPad – First Look

izone icon iZones for iPad – First LookApp developer JBMJBM just released iZone, a new time zone planning app for the iPad.  The app is designed to help users coordinate all the time zones they might call or visit through an interactive visual interface.  Since I’m on conference calls a lot for my job, I thought I’d give iZone a try.

When I plan a call, I’m routinely running time zone numbers through my head to find the best time to accommodate people in Asia, Europe and both coasts of the US.  This can be a time consuming task, especially if you have to account for countries observing Daylight Savings Time at different dates in the year.  To ease the process, I usually use free web tools like World Meeting Planner and Agree Date but I was looking forward to an iPad based app that wouldn’t require me to connect to the Internet.

The iZone app is straight forward to use, simply drag the slider to the time you’re interested in and you’ll see local times and dates listed for all the time zones you have selected.  There are 80+ times zones to choose from and I had no problem finding the 10 time zones I use most frequently for my calls.

Roger’s Liquid E, Reviewed by Slashgear

While we wait for our first Acer Android Device our friends in Canada now have the Liquid E. this is second handset in Acer’s Liquid series and it looks almost identical its predecessor. There has been a few welcome additions, first of which is the Snapdragon processor. Like the original Liquid, the Liquid E CPU is also under clocked to 768, so you dont get to enjoy the full befits of the 1GHZ clock speed. Another big change is the addition of Android 2.1 in favor of 1.6.now back to the similarities, it has a 3.5-inch WVGA capacitive touch screen, 5-megapixel autofocus camera, Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth 2.0. There is also a microSD slot and an FM Radio that can be used when you plug in your headphones in the 3.5mm jack. As stated in the Slashgear review, the phone is built pretty solid despite the fact that it is has a plastic case that tends to creak from time to time. Although we would’ve loved to see a few hard key on the face of the device, the touch sensitive keys are very responsive. Despite that it’s under clocked, it’s still pretty quick and you wouldn’t even know that it’s not running at the full 1GHZ unless someone told you. The Liquid E doesn’t come with a custom UI, if you like regular Android you’re going to love this phone. Updates shouldn’t take long as it does with a custom UI but it’s still up to Acer and Rogers to push it out to you. Overall, this is a very capable device and faired pretty well in the review. If you’re in the market for a mid-range handset this may be the phone for you. Head over to Slashgear for the full review as well as a few videos of this handset in action. Yes, it’s that time of day again. It’s time for another Android tablet that we will not see in stores for quite some time. This is a pretty impressive piece of work though. When it does hit, I see a few people snagging this one up.  Malata has introduced a 10-inch tablet, it’s called the SMB-A1011.

iPhone 4 screen smashed, Samsung defends AMOLED screen, 3 getting iPhone 4 in UK

The iPhone 4 isn’t even in the hands of consumers yet and already we have pics of one with a broken screen . This particular handset was a shell with the screen only and was broken in a test to see how strong the screen was. Apparently it’s worse than the iPhone 3GS in ruggedness. Samsung has defended its Super AMOLED screen after Steve Jobs said in his iPhone 4 unveiling keynote that the iPhone 4 screen was better. Samsung says that the iPhone 4 IPS LCD tech is no match for Super AMOLED , neener neener neener. UK mobile operator 3 has confirmed that it will be getting the iPhone 4 in the UK making it the fifth carrier to offer the handset. I wish so badly that we had that many options here in the US.
