Rumormill: Race-spec Tramontana to receive Cosworth V10
Filed under: MISC, Racing
It’s a precarious game making a racing car for the road. The Caparo T1 never seemed to have gotten off the ground, close as it was to a road-going F1 racer. The Tramontana is just about as close, but at half a million euros, the niche automaker is reportedly having trouble finding buyers.
The solution? Tap into the racing market. According to emerging reports from across the pond, Tramontana is considering replacing the twin-turbo V12 sourced from Mercedes with a Cosworth V10 for the competition model. The British engineering firm is known to many for its Formula One engine program: While it currently supplies 2.4-liter V8s to Williams, Lotus, HRT and Virgin, as recently 2006 it was still building 3.0-liter V10s for Scuderia Toro Rosso.
Cosworth also has plenty of expertise building engines for other racing series as well as roadcars, so there’s plenty to tap into to transform the Tramontana from a road-garbling beast to a curb-chomping racer.

Apple Announces iPhone 4: Available on June 24 for $199 and $299
Did you mark your calendar? Set all your appointments to tomorrow? Good. Because Apple has officially announced the next iPhone. It’s called the iPhone 4, and for all intents and purposes, it’s basically a juggernaut of a device all shoved into a ridiculously small sized frame. There’s a lot of returning features, and yet, all of those returning features are getting a pretty big upgrade for their brand new appearance on the market.

For example, the iPhone 4 features a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen. However, it adds what Apple is calling a Retina display, which is rocking a 960×640 display. There’s 326 pixels per inch, and just in case you’re not caught up in your pixels per inch information, the human eye can only see 300 ppi. So, Apple basically made sure that the display looks as crisp as humanly possible at all times. The device itself is only 9.3 millimeters thin, and the front and back are both manufactured of aluminosilcate glass, which is then subsequently chemically enhanced to be 30 times harder than plastic. This in turn makes it far more resistant to scratches. Both the front and back feature an oil-resistant coating (oleophobic?), while the edges are made of a single band of stainless steel.

The iPad – a Truly Magical Device
It seems that the iPad has truly lived up to its designation as a “magical” device for some early adopters.
Steve Jobs shared with the WWDC audience two e-mails he received. The first was from an iPad user who sent him a short note saying “I was sitting in a cafe with my iPad, and it got a girl interested in me. Now that’s what I call a magical device!”

The second was a note from iPad developer Theo Gray from Wolfram Associates. Gray says “I earned more on sales of The Elements for the iPad in the first day than from the past 5 years of Google ads on periodictable.com”

Qik, Premium Features Outlined for the EVO
Not too long ago we found out Qik would be charging for “premium features”. This was an additional fee of $4.99 a month. Couple this fee with the 4G and hotspot fee and the EVO was becoming quite an expensive device to own. The good thing is this fee wasn’t mandatory, it just unlocked access to those unnamed premium features.

Qik Features:
* Unlimited Qik-to-Qik video chat
* Unlimited Live streaming to the web
* Unlimited Live sharing to Social Networks (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Myspace)
* Unlimited Live sharing to Video sites (e.g. YouTube, Livestream) and blogs (e.g. Blogger, WordPress, Tumblr, Posterous)
* Unlimited Live sharing to IMs (COMING SOON)
* Qik-in-Touch Desktop App
* Video quality
o Up to 640×480 (Standard)
o Higher than 640×480 (Premium)
* Video archiving
o Unlimited (Premium)
* Unlimited automatic downloads to computer (COMING SOON, Premium)
* Snap photos while recording videos (COMING SOON, Premium)
* Video access settings
o Public, private (Standard)
o Public, private, group (Premium)
* Upload and share videos recorded with the native phone camera app (Premium)
* Priority Support (Premium)
Androidguys uncovered these features, now we all know what they are. As mentioned in an earlier post, video calls will be free. Even after you factor in the cost of this and 4G coverage, your plan would still be cheaper than those found on a few other carriers. For all you lucky people that got your hands on an EVO, you will have access to all these features for free until July 15th. If ownership of this awesome device wasn’t enough, Qik has just sweetened the pot (temporarily).
Apple patent app for solar power, WWDC 2010 today, Foxconn gives workers a raise
A new patent app from Apple surfaced last week that outlined a way to put solar panels behind the screen of devices. Apple is looking to add solar panels to all its gear. Sister site SlashGear will be live blogging WWDC 2010 when it kicks off later this afternoon. This is the event where Steve will show off the new iPhone according to rumors. Foxconn has promised to give the workers at its Chinese iPhone factory a raise of up to 66% based on performance. The workers would have to pass a 3-month evaluation to get the raise. Report: Twin-turbo V8 confirmed for 2012 BMW M5
Filed under: Sedan , Performance , BMW 2012 BMW M5 - Click above for high-res image gallery Dr. Kay Sigler , head of BMW’s M division has confirmed to no one’s surprise that the next generation M5 would indeed use a twin-turbocharged V8 in place of the current model’s V10. In fact, after last year’s debut of the X5 M and X6 M we would have been quite shocked to see anything but the V8. While the 500 horsepower V10 in today’s M5 is indeed powerful, in the years since its debut a number of even more powerful and, perhaps more importantly, torquier competitors have arrived. The supercharged 6.2-liter V8 in the Cadillac CTS-V and the turbocharged V10 in the Audi RS6 easily thrash the output of the Munich V10. The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 cranks out 555 hp and 500 pound-feet in the two SUVs, but we’re betting BMW will find a way to squeeze out even more for the sedan.
