Was the iPad Supposed to have a Gyroscope?

The recent teardown of an iPhone 4 and iPad by  UBM TechInsights uncovered an empty slot on the iPad that matches the space for the 3-axis gyroscope found in the iPhone 4.  Based on their findings, TechInsights believes the next generation of iPads will have the same 3-axis gyroscope functionality currently found in the newest iPhone. According to TechInsights’s Steve Bitton  ”there’s an almost-perfect spot (4mm x 4mm; the exact size of the MEMS gyro) for it, located right beside the iPad’s accelerometer.” Both the iPad and iPhone share several of the same components, so it’s not a stretch to think that the current iPad was originally going to have a 3-axis gyroscope chip. Why the chip was not included in the current iPad remains a mystery but Bitton believes it has something to do with a last minute change in chip suppliers.  The layout for the chip on the iPad does not match the pins layout found on the new iPhone but instead follows the layout found on a 3-axis gyro chip from InvenSense. Speculation on new iPad features is already running rampant with many people guessing which iPhone 4 functionalities will find their way over to the iPad.  The iPhone’s gyroscope, camera and retina display are the three leading features we’ve seen requested by our readers over the past several weeks.  Only time will tell what new surprises Steve and Co. have in store for us next year. Cisco Announces Cius – Jumps on the Tablet Bandwagon

Cisco recently announced they would enter into the tablet market with their new Cius tablet.  The Cius is an Android based device which features a 7″ 720P HD display, a camera, WiFi and 3G support. The huge success of Apple’s iPad has sparked renewed interest in tablet computers by device manufacturers and Cisco is the most recent to announce their device plans.

Cisco is targeting the Cius for the enterprise market and intends to leverage their strong enterprise presence and sales force to push the new device into corporate IT departments.  The Cius software features focus on sharing, collaboration and communication to help mobile professional’s stay connected with colleagues and customers. Cisco plans to integrate their ”Show and Share” video conferencing, WebEx collaboration app and “Cisco Quad” social networking tools with the Cius to help businesses increase productivity and stay better connected.

Cisco is not the only player targeting the enterprise market with tablets.  HP, who recently acquired Palm, has continued to push forward in this segment of the business.  They announced they would leverage the Plam WebOS in all of their new connected devices and they see great potential in the enterprise market.

Apple has not detailed an enterprise market plan for their iPad but we have already seen initial adoption of the iPad in a number of industries.  With more and more enterprises adopting the iPhone, IT departments are familiar with supporting an iOS device and many companies have  already invested in iOS applications and development.

The enterprise segment will be a hotly contested market segment for tablet manufactures in the coming years.  Currently Apple seems to lead the way with it’s rich application eco-system but powerhouse companies like HP, Dell and Cisco should not be underestimated, especially when fighting on their home turf.

Cisco is targeting the device to sell for under $1,000. No word yet from Cisco on when the device will be available.

Samsung Epic 4G Gets Handled in Early Preview

Most of the Epic’s specs are well known as well as how it will match up against other phones. At Engadget, they were able to receive one and do a test run on it. They went through a brief checklist including the Hardware, screen, software and its overall performance. The 4″ screen isn’t the same as the Droid X and HTC EVO’s 4.3″ screen but not too much of a noticeable difference. The keyboard doesn’t add that much weight to the phone and is very nice, it also comes with a front facing camera. The same Galaxy S Super AMOLED screen, it will come with Android 2.1 with 2.2 closely following. The epic also supports the same 1GHz Hummingbird CPU of the Galaxy S all in all this looks like a very solid phone. [ via engadget] ) View full post on Android Community
