Will Google TV Impact iPad Sales?
This week Google created a lot of buzz with the announcement of their Google TV service. They have partnered with Intel, Sony, Logitech, Best Buy, Dish Networks and Adobe to develop Google TV, which will be based on the Android operating platform and run the Google Chrome web browser. Google’s new service has been described as “an open platform that adds the power of the web to the television viewing experience, ushering in a new category of devices for the living room”. In addition, Google has touted their service as a way to not only stream video from various content providers including Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand and YouTube, but it will also run apps from the Android Market. So should Apple be worried about Google TV impacting iPad sales? Google’s decision to link Google TV with their Android Market (Android apps) is a smart move. Google recently announced their upcoming tablet in partnership with Verizon. They already have several Android-based handsets across many wireless service providers, and they continue to push their Android OS across multiple devices in the industry. With this news, the natural reaction for all of us would be to think how awesome it will be to run apps everywhere – your TV, mobile phone, and tablet. But, do you really plan to use that many apps on your TV? Do you really want to use your TV as a computer? And, I mean using it as a real computer, not simply to stream video or quickly view pictures. Some recent studies have shown that people are multitasking more and more while watching TV. In other words, most of you have a smart phone (iPhone, Android phone, Blackberry) or some sort of gadget (PSP, Nintendo DSx, iPod Touch) that allows you to do many things at your own pace. With the iPad’s successful launch, and the upcoming tablets, you have been given a new way to consume content, communicate with others, do some work, and even play comfortably wherever you go. I think the benefit of having a separate device like your iPad or a smart phone gives you flexibility. It is hard to imagine that lots of people will be using their TVs to surf the Internet constantly or even play with multiple apps all the time. Of course, there are scenarios in which you will run apps on your TV and enjoy the experience. If services like Google TV allow you to consume a personalized selection of shows from Netflix, cable, broadcast and the Internet, I’m sure there will be many useful apps for your TV. In summary, I think the best thing is to bring flexibility to the consumer. This is exactly what all these new services and products are offer you. There is an opportunity for everyone to compete in the market. Apple is already enjoying their success by establishing a strong eco-system. Assuming Google TV has a successful launch, I think it also will bring a good eco-system to consumers and developers. I just don’t think iPad sales will be heavily impacted by Google’s recent announcement. The iPad provides you multiple ways in which you can consume your content, communicate with others, and play wherever you go. Google TV is meant to be consumed at home much similar to Apple TV or Boxee. What do you think about Google TV’s announcement? Does it change your decision of buying an iPad? Guns N’ Roses Vook for iPad – First Look
Are you a Rock fan? Do you remember Guns N’ Roses (GNR)? If you are a hard rocker, you certainly will.
For those who do not know, Guns N’ Roses is an American rebel hard rock band formed back in 1985. According to many, the band revived the punk attitude-driven hard rock scene. Phew! I had to squeeze in this last sentence to satisfy many of our frequent hard-rock readers that pinged us about GNR’s new Vook!
You may be asking, what is a Vook? A vook is a new innovative way for reading. It blends a written book, high-quality video and the power of the Internet into a single, complete story. Basically, you can read your book, watch videos that enhance the story and connect with authors and your friends through social media all on one screen.
This week was the official release of a new GNR Vook called Reckless Road. The book was written by Marc Canter (the band’s historian) and published by Vook, a California-based digital publisher. It tells the story of the making of the classic album Appetite for Destruction and features text, concert footage and interviews with band members.
At the request of many of our readers, I took a quick look at GNR’s Vook. The video book offers 40 minutes of video interviews and plenty of images. The book takes you through the early years of Guns N’ Roses. There are lots of video interviews with the band and their associates. I can say that Reckless Road definitely represents the band when it was living on the edge of greatness and constant chaos. I must say there are some unprecedented photos and memorabilia from the early years of one of the great rock bands from the 1980s and 1990s.

1-in-5 US consumers about to buy an iPad
The iPad’s popularity does not stop growing. Thanks to a mix of good press, and word of mouth from highly satisfied owners, one-in-five consumers in the US are thinking about buying an iPad, according to a poll from ChangeWave Research. The survey involved a sample of 3,400 people, and revealed that about 20% of US consumers were “somewhat likely” or “very likely” to buy an iPad, a large increase compared to similar polls ran before the iPad launch. One caveat though, only a fifth of the likely buyers are thinking about buying an iPad within 3 months, while the rest plans to wait at least 6 months before splurging. In other words, the bulk of the potential buyers are waiting for Christmas to make a move. Another survey ran by ChangeWave revealed that nine out of ten iPad buyers were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their purchase. As for the 10% who were not happy with the device, the main reasons for dissatisfaction were lack of camera, connectivity issues, and lack of Flash support.
