Conde Nast Clarifies GQ App Downloads
Looks like GQ’s apps sales might be higher than first reported. Conde Nast contacted PadGadget to provide some clarification to a story we ran earlier this morning on GQ’s iPad apps sales.
According to Conde Nast, there have been 57,000 downloads of their GQ app for the iPhone and iPad since last December. According to GQ spokeswoman Peri Dorset, they have no way of knowing how many iPad downloads there have been, as GQ does not sell an iPad only version of their app.
Obviously it’s hard to say what impact the iPad has had on GQ app sales but according to Dorset, they saw a traffic spike during the initial iPad launch on April 3 and then again on when the 3G iPad launched.

Amazon Rallying Troops to Fight Against the iPad
Amazon is staffing up heavily to take on the iPad. Nick Bilton (New York Times blogger) , noticed a flurry of new job openings at Lab126, the team behind the Kindle. 81 positions are currently offered at their Cupertino campus, less than a mile away from Apple’s headquarters. The openings are for a variety of jobs, from packaging to design, but are mostly geared towards engineers, as Amazon is ramping up its teams to build the next generation of the Kindle, likely designed to become another “iPad killer”, with enhanced capabilities in order to play third party apps like games. A question remains unanswered though: how long will it take Amazon to release its new device? Most analysts expect the next generation Kindle to be commercialized by early next year, which may be too late for Amazon to fight against Apple, and its large iPad installed base. Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior HD – iPad Game Review
I have been hooked to the fighting games genre since the first time I inserted a quarter in a coin-op machine. Since then, I simply cannot recall how many days I spent playing games such as Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Dead or Alive. Most gamers will agree with the fact that one of the key ingredients to enjoy a beat’em up at its fullest is a good joystick/gamepad, so reproducing the full experience on the iPad seems like a real challenge – at least at first. With Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior HD , Digital Legends Entertainment was up to the task, and managed to make an amazing looking, fun to play fighting game. Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior HD is by far one of the best Bruce Lee game ever made, and certainly the best fighting game for the iPad as of now. The game takes place in the 50’s, and has you fight through a variety of martial arts masters, gang members and thugs that were notorious at the time. At the beginning of your journey, your character is limited to basic moves such as punch and kick, but as you progress, additional moves will be offered to you, as well as more playable characters. Each character has its own specialty, such as Kung Fu, Karate or Thai Boxing. The fighters’ moves are extremely realistic, fast and very smooth. The game looks amazing, and features shader effects, dynamic shadows, dynamic backgrounds and dynamic camera angles – when compared to a game console, the quality of the graphics is somewhere between what a Playstation 2 and a Playstation 3 can do. Impressive. The implementation of the controls is where the game falls a bit short. While very responsive and well designed, the use of the touch screen forced Digital Legends Entertainment to simplify the controls, and besides the virtual pad that allows you to move your character around the screen, the game only provides one punch and one kick buttons. Not the best setup for the fighting games aficionados out there, but the developer presumably decided to keep things simple, as more buttons may have made the game impossible to play on a touch screen. One last grief: you cannot jump, at least not without having to invoke a kick combo for instance. Note that Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior HD features a decent combo system that helps compensate for these limitations, but still, we are far from what a Super Street Fighter IV can offer. The soundtrack is pretty good, with some nice sound effects, Bruce Lee yells and screams exactly like in the movies. We noticed a couple bugs here and there, but nothing major. We were much more bugged by the fact that the game does not offer a multiplayer mode, a feature that the developer will hopefully provide via an update. What we liked: The game is fun to play, and will keep you hooked for 10+ hours. The graphics look great, the 3D engine is impressive, and overall the game is very fast yet smooth. Lots of action for the money. What we didn’t like: The gameplay needs some improvement. The addition of basic moves such as jump, as well as the addition of a multiplayer mode would make this game a 5 stars game. To buy or not to buy: Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior HD is simply the best fighting game available for the iPad, as of today. Overall, and besides a couple shortcomings, the game is a blast. My iPad Has Finally Arrived!
When iPads were released on April 3rd, our PadGadget team was standing in line in front of a Dallas area Apple store waiting to purchase them. Two 16 GB WiFi versions were reserved with our name and ready for pick up. We shared those iPads until April 30th and then found ourselves once again waiting in line, this time to purchase the 3G model. These new 3G models allowed us the freedom we both wanted and needed, so we decided to sell our “old” WiFi iPads and purchase one last 3G. After looking high and low that first weekend, and calling every Apple Store and Best Buy in the Dallas area in search of one last iPad, we were forced to add our name to the Apple Store iPad waiting list. One week went by, then another and finally today, I received the long awaited email from Apple telling me my iPad was ready and waiting. Although I had 24 hours to get to the store to make my purchase, it only took me 2 hours to finish my workout, get ready and drive over to the Apple Store. I’m now back at work, with my new iPad in tow, and already taking advantage of the 3G freedom. If you’re really anxious to get your iPad, you might want to order online from Apple and put your name on the waiting list at the store just to see which one comes first. Online orders ship in 7-10 business days, so you might get lucky and receive an iPad sooner than the two week waiting period we experienced with the Apple Store waiting list. Plus, the online store has many of the accessories in stock, which our local Apple Store always seems to be missing, giving you the opportunity for one stop shopping. With our whole PadGadget team now using individual iPads, we’re working hard and discussing new ideas for our site. We hope you stay tuned for the fun things we are planning this summer!
