Software Patch to Solve Wi-Fi Issues
By now, everyone is familiar with the Wi-Fi connectivity issues that were reported by some iPad owners, and investigated by PadGadget back in April. Most of the issues reported involved loss of signal, lost passwords and dropped connections, just to name a few. Apple responded to customer concerns by posting an iPad FAQ in the Apple Customer Support Knowledge Base to try and resolve the problem. Back in April, we also saw many media outlets reporting about Apple’s tech support promising a software patch for a “very small number of beleaguered iPad owners”. MacRumors, reported today, that Apple recently updated their tech support document stating they are working hard on a fix and will “address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update.” Apple said the problem only impacts a “small number” of users, but still it is inconvenient for those that have been affected by this issue. Until then, I guess the updated tech support document will continue to list a number of workarounds including updating your Wi-Fi router firmware, adjusting the iPad’s screen brightness, renewing your IP address, and using WPA or WPA2 wireless security. Stay tuned, we will let you know as soon as the software patch becomes available. Tags : ipad WiFi Issues , iPad WiFi Sales , WiFi patch Category : News Powered by WizardRSS | Full Text RSS Feeds
When You Cannot Innovate, Copy!
The reasons behind HP’s move to acquire Palm Inc. were questioned by many, until leaks about HP’s decision to switch its Slate’s operating system to Palm’s WebOS instead of Windows 7 surfaced. After the launch of the iPad, rumor has it that HP quickly came to this conclusion: Windows 7 may be well suited for desktops, but is in no way able to compete with iPhone OS when it comes to tablet-like devices.
In a matter of weeks, HP went back to the drawing board, revamped the project, and renamed the whole thing “Hurricane” (not sure what they actually mean by that, I would have personally chosen something like “Phoenix” instead…). The feature set of the new device is still very unclear, but things like Flash support, dual cameras, USB port and SD memory card slot have been mentioned.
But the most interesting – and totally overlooked – tidbit behind this move is the fact that HP implicitly confirmed Apple’s strategy. Before the launch of the iPad, and while many analysts were bashing Apple for building nothing else but a “blown up iPhone”, HP started to market the Slate/Hurricane as a Windows 7 powered device, and even let Microsoft’s CEO showcase the device during one of the CES keynotes earlier this year (see videos below the fold).
IM+ Lite Available for iPad
Shape Services is bringing their IM+ Lite app to your iPad. If you are in need of a multi-client messaging app for your iPad, but do not want to spend money on something that might not work for you, IM+ Lite may be a good option. IM+ Lite is a free download from the App Store. Shape Services recently updated the full ad-free version of IM+ with iPad support, and now the free lite version of the app has gone universal as well. The following are some of the highlights for IM+ Lite: With the exception of Skype chat, IM+ Lite supports the same features as the full version of IM+: Twitter, Facebook, Google Talk, Yahoo, MSN/Live Messenger, AIM/iChat, ICQ, MySpace and Jabber. It supports push notifications for all of its supported chat services, and for new email in Hotmail, Yahoo, or Gmail as well. It allows you to send photos, videos, geo-locations, voice messages as MP3 files. Just like the paid version, IM+ Lite users can choose to add speech recognition for $0.99 a month as an in-app purchase. The ad-free version of IM+ is $9.99 , but if you haven’t tried it yet, the IM+ lite version is a good way to do just that. Unfortunately, IM+ (full and free versions) still does not support group chats. If you rely on a group chat feature, you may need too look for other options (example: BeeJiveIM ). ABC’s iPad App a Hit
As many predicted, Apple’s iPad has become a must-have device for video enthusiasts . The iPad’s high definition screen and small form factor make it convenient to carry around the house, or on the road, and watch great looking TV shows or movies. ABC’s iPad application has been extremely popular here at PadGadget HQ and it looks like we are not the only ones that love ABC TV. Disney, ABC’s parent company, announced users have downloaded the app over 400,000 times and they have watched more than 1.5 million TV shows in the first month of the app being available on the market. That’s over 39 million minutes of Internet TV! With these numbers, it’s no wonder Hulu and CBS are looking to jump on the iPad TV bandwagon. ABC recently updated their iPad app to add 3G wireless connectivity allowing iPad users to watch TV anyplace at anytime. There was some initial concern among readers that video quality while streaming over 3G vs WiFi would not be as good. Our informal tests showed the two devices produced similar results but WiFi still had the best video quality. Curious what folks are watching on ABC? To date, the top five series viewed on the iPad are: Lost Modern Family V Dancing with the Stars Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Tags : ABC , App , CBS , Disney , Hulu , streaming , TV , video Category : News , iPad for Fun Powered by WizardRSS | Full Text RSS Feeds
Air Video – iPad App Review
One of the most frequent things I do with my iPad is watch videos. Of course, video files take a lot of space. My digital movie collection is quite large and keeps growing. If I count my family videos, the collection becomes even larger. There is no possible way for me to cram all my video content into my iPad.
Of course, you can always get around these size limits by tweaking iTunes’ smart playlists to give you only unwatched movies from your collection. However, there is an easier way. Why not stream video content from your media PC or Mac?
I have several friends that have run into the issue of trying to convert digital movies and personal videos to a suitable iPad format. Fortunately, the Air Video app offers a very nice solution. Air Video takes your computer’s video library and allows you to stream content from selected folders to your iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
Air Video Overview
Air Video will play almost any video format. The app will even play your ripped AVI files and BitTorrent DIVX movies. A variety of codecs are supported - mp4, m4v, mov, avi, wmv, asf, mpg, mpeg, mkv, divx. The app converts those files into the “mp4” format on the fly. Watching videos is almost as simple as using your iPad’s Videos app. Simply open up the app and choose a video to play. (Note: DRM protected videos as well as proprietary codecs are NOT supported).
