Centaurus 2 Solar Vehicle Project
I really had no idea that there was a race for solar powered vehicles, but apparently there is a 2010 American Solar Challenge, a 1100 mile race from Tulsa to Chicago.
This particular solar-powered car is one of the competitors. It is made by The Solar Vehicle Project team at the University of Minnesota, and it is called the Centaurus 2.
You will note the driver of this vehicle, and I can’t tell if he (I’m assuming it is a he) is off center or not. It might just be the angle of the shot, but he looks a little off-center. It does look like the vehicle has three wheels, though.
My source does tell me that this car is about 3 feet tall, 16 feet long, and 6 feet wide. It weighs at 400 pounds, which is pretty light compared to a car.
You will note the solar cells on it. I think it’s interesting that they seem to adorn only half the vehicle. I don’t know if that’s part of the design, or perhaps the solar car isn’t finished yet.

Catalyst all-in-one cooking solution
For some reason, the Catalyst all-in-one reminds me of an overhead projector that I used to have in my high school.
Sure, the bulb is a little high, and wide, but that is only because it is a microwave. In all honesty, I don’t see how that bar can hold up all that microwave oven, really.
Of course, that isn’t selling point of this Catalyst. Not that this isn’t selling yet, of course. The cooking top or range can split open, revealing a deep fry cooker underneath.
Granted, you probably should be cutting down and not increasing your trans-fat content, and my Source has pointed out that a deep fry cooker creates some serious oily vapors.
So, if this concept ever becomes a reality, I am not looking forward to the box that it comes in. I mean, there is a lot of negative space on this product. I can just picture all of the styrofoam that would be wasted in this box. This is stuff you have to think about when you have a product like this.
Also, you should probably think about how much counter top space that one has to have enough space for a product like this.
G.Skill International unveils Phoenix SATA SSD

SSDs seem to be all the rage these days, especially when notebooks are getting smaller and lighter than ever before, requiring something which will shrink in size equally to keep up with the times. Among the advantages SSDs have over regular hard drives would be its quietness as well as speed, and with no moving parts to worry about, you also lower the risk of having it die on you when you’re on the road during a particularly bumpy ride. G. Skill has rolled out its Phoenix SATA II 2.5” Solid State Drive recently that features the latest ultra-high performance SandForce SF-1200 controller, capable of offering 280MB/s and 270MB/s of read and write speeds, respectively, coming in 50GB, 100GB and 200GB denominations. No idea on pricing or availability, but you will get a 2-year warranty with each purchase. Have you jumped aboard the SSD bandwagon just yet?

Take Your Gamecube Anywhere With This Portable Mod
Take a moment and think about your favorite games that came out of the console system. All of those good times playing Super Mario Bros. and Rogue Squadron 2, right? After the nostalgia wears off, think about if you had the option to take that experience with you wherever you go and voila! A portable Gamecube mod fully equipped with an LCD display and controls salvaged from the original console controller. An impressive feat to be sure, but let’s look at the guts.
The design here is actually pretty straightforward. Thanks to the ever so tiny discs that the Gamecube took advantage of it lends itself to portability and the disc reader is located just under the LCD screen for easy access. Even the back plate is put together well, sporting a Nintendo logo and a depiction of Mario and Yoshi. You’ll also be sporting a built in memory card, brightness and volume adjustments, along with something Nintendo took awhile to grasp, a headphones slot. If you’re wondering where the battery pack goes, keep on wondering, because there isn’t one. Considering how many vehicles have standard plugs these days though I don’t find it to be that big of a drawback. This particular model was made on commission but the author stated he’d be willing to make more. According to the original creator the next portable Gamecube he creates will have “the works” so perhaps a battery powered model will be available in the future.

If you’re wondering about price I was able to dig up the figures from the original post. According to the creator this model was sold for $750 USD, 500 British Currency. Pretty steep to be sure but putting together a portable console ain’t exactly a walk in the park. I’d seriously consider getting one if they could slap a battery pack on that thing, which of course is a possibility for future models. Feedback on the original post has been widely positive, although a few have pointed out the lack of batteries means its not technically portable (really?). Now the Gamecube was a small system to begin with, but I wonder how well you could convert over other consoles like the Xbox 360. If you’re a regular Walyou reader you’ve likely seen something like this before. This PS3 Laptop shows that newer consoles can also be made portable…you’ll just need your own laptop case to carry them!

Another Scary Steampunk Mask from the House of Bob Basset
Wearing masks was almost close to becoming a necessity when H1N1 was spreading like a wild fire. Demand for masks suddenly shot up and if you talk about some cool, unconventional masks, the name that’s gonna haunt your memory is Bob Basset. Known for their ferocious masks, Bob Basset masks have been around for more than 20 years.

The steampunk mask, from the house of Bob Basset is my pick of the day. Crafted and produced by the Ukrainian artist Petrov and his team, these mask take you to the Victorian age when steam was used for producing electricity.

You could check out other Steampunk masks. I wonder if any Hollywood director has ever used these masks in a Sci-fi steampunk movie. These masks can fit almost everybody since it has a shoe- lace style like adjusting mechanism.

Apple iPad gets international release date on May 28th

Folks living outside of the USA will be pleased to know that the Apple iPad will finally make its way to their part of the world officially without having to rely on imports or gifts from friends Stateside. The hallowed date would be May 28th, and if you happen to live in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, then hip hip hooray for you and a bottle of rum! To make sure that you are able to get your hands on one of these puppies, make sure you place a pre-order on the iPad model that you want (Wi-Fi only or the 3G with Wi-Fi version) from Apple’s online store in all nine countries stated from next Monday onwards (May 10th). Do you think the continent of Europe will see superb iPad sales just like those in the US, where Apple actually moved over a million iPads since its official release? Here’s some trivia – customers of the iPad have already downloaded more than 12 million apps from the App Store, alongside over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.
As for folks who are residing in Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore, you will have to wait until July for this device to hit the respective markets, and there is still no official word on local pricing as well as pre-order plans, although Apple isn’t going to leave you hanging high and dry as they will be announcing availability as well as the relevant details for those nine countries at a later date. Guess this is where you learn to exercise patience as a virtue, eh?
Just in case you were living under a rock for the past year, the iPad is a device that boasts a much larger display than the iPhone and iPod touch, although it functions pretty much the same way using a similar operating system, letting you connect to your apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. With it, you can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface.

Borders to carry Kobo eReader

eBook readers seem to be all the rage these days, but it has yet to catch on in a big way across all sections of the population simply because it is still too expensive for those living in developing countries, while there are many different formats out there for users to consider before making a purchase. Well, this has not stopped the iPad from doing gangbusters in terms of sales, with the Amazon Kindle also being another contender to worry about if one is going to enter the market (granted, the iPad is not an eBook reader per se, but it does carry the ability to read downloaded copies of your favorite tomes). Borders, the mega bookstore chain, will dip their toes in the market by taking pre-orders for the Kobo eReader while debuting its eBook store and apps powered by Kobo from next month onwards in order to keep up with the times. Guess they know that selling books alone with some accessories and media on the side isn’t going to cut the mustard any more, and hence has embarked on a strategy that will provide rich digital content and a wide variety of devices that feature emerging technologies. Another advantage that is has is being a device-neutral, rich-content provider, letting them sell the Kobo eReader alongside a range of other eReading devices in Borders stores in special digital shops called Area-e which will roll out this August.
You will be able to place pre-orders for the Kobo eReader which currently showcases the Borders branded eBook store at www.borders.com/koboereader. Just to get an idea on how the Kobo eReader stacks up against its immediate rival, Wired Magazine has touted it as “the real Kindle killer” due to its attractive features and low price of just $149.99, making it one of the most affordable eReaders available. Guess decent hardware coupled with a great content delivery system (which hopefully is what Borders can offer) will make this a great device, eh? After all, each purchase will get you started right out of the box since the Kobo eReader will come preloaded with 100 classic books, arriving at your doorsteps from June 17th onwards, just in time for Father’s Day if you were wondering what to get dad on that day.
The upcoming Borders eBook store will boast more than a million titles, making this a truly exciting time to be in as customers look set to be spoilt for choice. Which camp will you side?
